Does the Toneport require you to use their software only, or can you

the new Zoom pedals do this, and they work without a computer :)
(they come with Cubase LE, which sets up the USB port as an input/output device).
how well does the TGX work as a standalone?

I had twp $25 Amazon gift certs burning a hole in my pocket, so I
orderd the TonePort GX. Looks like a great package for the price.
