Got my Line 6 TonePort GX
Got my Line 6 TonePort GX
I love it! I played with it for hours today. I'm sure that it's just
my inexperience with guitar, but for $50, this thing seems amazing.
And I didn't know about the online component to the software.
You can download songs and backing tracks, and it will load the guitar
tones that go with the song.
That part is only free for one month, then there's a subscription. But
it looks like a great way to get songs under my belt. I'm not sure,
but I think it also displays the tab as well.
I really clicked on understannding the pentatonics over the weekend,
and the fretboard has started to come together for me. So having
access to some backing tracks really gave my scales a workout.
For the first time I'm no longer intimidated by the guitar..,it 's
starting to make sense.

Congrats Mitch. Anything that helps you understand the instrument,
gets you playing tunes, and inspires more practice has to be a good
thing.
One thing to consider is for that $50 you would have gotten about 3
half hour lessons from a local teacher. If this tool does more for
you than those 3 lessons, then you come out ahead.

It's fun, but I'll still need lessons for techniique at the very
least. No matter how many videos i watch, I still can't do vibrato at
all.

do you mean vibrato as in finger bend/shake/wiggle?

Now that I'm playing this TonePort constantly, I'm going to need some
kick ass powered speakers. LOL...before long my whole studio is going
to be migrated up here to the "family PC."

If you have the money...
I use a pair of M-Audio BX5a's and a Rockit 10 Sub.
Easily the best PC sound system I've ever heard. It even beats my beloved
Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 Ultra setup.
The sub is mandatory. While the BX5a's have excellent and smooth response,
as well as razor-sharp imaging, it has NO BALLS whatsoever in the low end.

Wouldn't headphones be the appropriate solution ??for a beadroom or
den?? I mean if you wanted REAL tone get an AMP - no ?? ed s.

I plug mine into a small stereo, the same one I use to listen to music with.

Hey Ed, have you looked at the tone port and other computer based
playalong stuff?
Cheap, tons of learning, sounds, etc. No heavy equipment, just a
puter, interface, software, and as our friend is finding out, some
decent speakers, bang you are in biz.
If you are the least bit computer savy, this is a really fine way to
get going without getting confused by the myriad of gear out there.
In the meantime, while you are learning the instrument, you can
educate yourself on the gear that is out there, and begin accumulating
stuff prior to playing with others.
Not a bad way to go imo.

playalong stuff?
Cheap, tons of learning, sounds, etc. No heavy equipment, just a
puter, interface, software, and as our friend is finding out, some
decent speakers, bang you are in biz.
If you are the least bit computer savy, this is a really fine way to
get going without getting confused by the myriad of gear out there.

Well - I have & do use my computer to adjust pitch on tunes out of
pitch and set things to loop using "WAVEPAD" free down load software -
and the run in thru a Beringer Vamp2 and headphones for practice &
learning without bothering people - but for the most part - I HATE
computers near my music ( I get enough of that at work) , except to
burn a CD or to post something on the net. But I LOVE big and Heavy
and as little digital as possible -
