I met one of the other dads at my son's Boy Scout meeting last week,
and he's also a guitar newbie. But the big difference is he's
spending lots of money on the hobby. Not just gear, but instructional
materials.

So he loaned me this DVD, and I learned more from it in a weekend than
I've learned in the 2-3 months since I started.

Jamie Humphries is a really excellent and natural teacher.

I learned how to find all the notes on the fretboard, and could
navigate the whole fretboard within about an hour, and know what every
note was.

He also gets into the CAGED chord system which I only skimmed and need
to re-watch. But it looks like a pretty thorough discussion.

I have that DVD. I've learned quite a bit from it.
I've watched several "learn guitar" videos and that is one of the very
few that offered any benefit. I paid $19.95 for it....so it's not a
bank buster...

Hell, that's cheaper than a $20.00 Lumpy nut replacement!

I have a Lumpy Nut. The doctor did an ultrasound on it.

It cost way more than $20.

when you say learned the notes, do you mean by name, as to what fret
you're on, or by sound?

By name and location on the fretboard. It really helped me out with
planning to move from one pattern to the next, and knowing where my
root is going to be on the next pattern.

Couldn't that be done without an instructional dvd?

Jamie is a regular writer for the British publication Total Guitar
Technique.

I subscribed for a year, and thought it was the best instructional
publication for a wide range of styles and playing levels. Came with
cd in each issue.

Problem is the $75 to pay and deliver it to the States was more than I
wanted to pay at the time.

Jamie's stuff was always good though, so it doesn't surprise me he has
a good dvd out.

Btw, on the back cover where feedback from other artists are found,
does Desi Serna have anything to say about the dvd?
