Get a tutor if you can, nothing is better than a real teacher. Failing that
get a decent beginners book or DVD.

there are some "lessons" on youtube and some are quite good.

Re: not even begginer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Find a guitar buddy - someone you know who's willing to "show you a
few chords" - don't expect a real lesson, just learn a few things, and
hang out and talk about guitar and listen to stuff - decide what you
really think is cool - figure how tabs work, and chord diagrams
( basically kindergarten stuff) and when you're ready to really
rocknroll, get an actual teacher (FASTEST way to learn). try just a
half dozen lessons - you should be able to absorb enough to get a LONG
way on your own. try a few different teachers, too.

I'm a new beginner. I'll put in my 2 cents worth anyway for what it's
worth. I've got 'Mastering The Guitar 1A'(no teacher)by Mel Bay,
which I really like. If something is not clear, there are videos on
youtube, and there is also this group which has some very helpful
people. I'm currently working chords: C,G,G7,D,Em. And I find that
it is taking a very long time to master them. My left hand needs a
lot of strength.

I think many beginners press too hard on the strings check what pressure is
necessary to cleanly play a chord anythign else is just stress on your
joints and muscles. also FWIW make sure you're relaxed playing the guitar,
particularly through the shoulder.

Even that (relaxing chords) can take a while. This
pursuit takes years. Because of that, I think you really
gotta wannit else you'll hear many Sirens calling you
(seductively) to quit.

Tie yourself to the guitar and plug your ears
-- don't listen to the Sirens! Turning up the amp
helps.

I can just about guarantee I see what's
giving you hand problems.

"I'm working on chords" means, I'll bet, that
you're playing those chords, isolated, not
in any song. You're trying to hold down that
C chord so that every note in the chord sounds
perfectly and sustains forever.

No real song would require that. You play the
chord for a brief moment and then move on
to another chord.

If you're clamping down on that chord, trying
to make it sustain and make each note ring
out un-muted, it's not realistic.

With just three of those chords, G-C-D you can
play eighty-nine gazillion songs.

Get a fake book full of songs.
Get a teacher, even if just for a month,
to show you how those three chords can
play nearly any song ever written.
