ABG -> GAS -> Another Amp?

Wondering if these folks been reading about the woes of playing an ABG
away from the outlet...

I've had fun with the Microcube for regular electrics -- Anybody try
this one yet?

Wow! 2.5watts per channel!

I think I'll keep my Phil Jones Briefcase thank you.

I'm a little confused as to how Roland can claim to be pioneers in the
battery powered bass amp market though - and say "At last bass players
have a battery powered amp solution!" as though things like the pignose
30 haven't been around for something like 15 years already.

It is about time we had some choice though - and maybe a whopping 5
watts is all you need to compete with a couple of acoustic guitars.

Doesn't seem like much power but the video sounded pretty darned good. Plus
all the built in's are great. Like you said, might work well with acoustic
guitars.
I'm heading to L.A. Saturday, hopefully GC or Sam Ash will have one.

Yeah, the video always sounds good! I'm sorry, you can call me old
school, but 5 watts and a tiny speaker (even 4 of them) just doesn't
cut it even with acoustic guitars. I've got a small practice amp like
this and even after changing the speaker it still sucks even for
practice. If I had 5 wasts I'd want it fed into the biggest most
efficient cab on the planet!

My solution: Laney 75 watt 1 x 15 combo run with inverter from boat
trolling battery. Does anything you need in acoustic. And still "bass-
portable" if you know what I mean. Somehow we are all suckers for
heavy gear and a trolling battery is pretty heavy.

If you want decent volume with no amps allowed, then an upright bass
is the ONLY choice. No worries about being drowned out by acoustic
guitars even RESONATOR acoustic guitars!

What kind of run time are you getting?

{Been sketching out a battery/inverter for remote jobs (Overnight
suitcase with pull along handle, a couple solar panels for trickle)
mostly to service a recording rig.}

Well, a video, played through computer speakers of a recording of an amp
means absolutely nothing.

I'll be interested to know what you think - especially if you can
compare with a Phil Jones Bass or Pignose 30 or Crate Taxi.

5 watts doesn't sound much, but, with equivalent efficiencies that is a
bit like playing my briefcase (90watts) at just about 1/3 power - and a
completely unscientific experiment reveals that the briefcase on 1/3
power is roughly equivalent to the acoustic output of my El Capitan.

Furthermore, using my briefcase at acoustic jams with a fierce sound
controller who turns me down to suit the mix of instruments indicates
that just over half volume (or 10 watts) is about right to balance with
a couple of acoustic guitars and a singer or two.

Of course there's all this logarithmic stuff and etc. but still - I have
to call in slightly skeptical at the practical value of a 5 watt bass
amp.

I got that wrong! I knew I would! The volume control at just over half
mast is more like 50 watts.

I wish Phil Jones had put the little watts LED's on the briefcase like
he has on some of his bigger heads, that way I could work this stuff out
much more easily.

Actually I have an Altec Lansing surround sound system on my computer so
the sound is quite good. In fact I rarely listen to my JBL/Yamaha house
system anymore (it's not THAT good but enough that I don't bother with the
house rig).
And for that matter, I was really pointing out the fact that a YouTube video
sounded pretty good. That gave me reason to want to hear the amp in person.
I have no intention of buying one because I have no real use for it. Just
want to hear for myself.

Well, I'll rephrase that. A YouTube video played through really good
speakers still doesn't give much of an indication of how well it
actually performs.

Thinking about it, the pignose hog 30 sounded so awful I doubt even a
well crafted video could make it sound good - so maybe it does say
something.

Indeed - and I look forward to hearing your review - I doubt I'll
actually be able to hear one in person here any time soon.
