Sweet Emotion

Sweet Emotion

My band does this song. They also want me to do the bass intro
correctly. (Funny they can't do it well enough to SHOW me.) Anyway, I do
a close approximation of the intro line as shown in this tab:
* w w w .ultimate-guitar . com /tabs/a/aerosmith/sweet emotion ver2 btab.htm
(sure hope they don't get shut down on the basis of this post lol)

That tab seems to me to be accurate, that is exactly what I hear being
played. However it is quite a little tongue twister so to speak. I can
do it as per the tab slowly, but up to tempo I have trouble doing it
consistently. Specifically, it's the G note on the G string followed by
two sixteenth notes on the A note of the A string followed by the A
(octave) on the G string, all done as consecutive sixteenth notes, that
get my index and middle finger tied up. The only way I can see to
correctly play this is to alternate fingers on each and every note in
that part. ( I can get away with raking in the 2nd measure as the notes
fall on the A and the D string.)

Anyone else do this song? Do you agree that this tab is correct? Do you
play it that way, if so, got any suggestions or tips? Just practice it
more maybe?

The tab is correct; keep your middle finger on the 12th fret "A" on the
"A" string; and use it to also hit the 12th fret "G" on the "G" string.
Use the pinky to hit the 14th fret "A" on the "G" string.

I'm talking about right hand technique, not left.

Hi Oscar,

I play this one, and it seems to me that that tab has an extra beat.
Here's the intro the way I do it:

G||-----------12-------14-------------------------||
D||*-------------------------------12-------11---*||
A||*---12--12---12-12------12-12------12-12------*||
E||-----------------------------------------------||
e e t t t t t E t t t t

e = 8th note
t = 16th note
E = dotted 8th note

You definitely need to alternate your plucking fingers on this one, or
you'll get mixed up in a hurry. Except when you go from the D to the A
string, then you just rake. I start out with my middle finger, which
makes the reach over two strings easier. It's a great song for working
on string crossing:)

Cheers!

Aaarrrgh, of course, you're going to have to use your index on the high
A. Oh well, do try alternating. When I first learned this song, I wasn't
paying much attention to my right hand, and that made all the
difference. The intro is pretty easy and a lot of fun to play once you
get your right hand right.

Cheers!

And the middle finger on the high G? That's what I'm doing. I think
I'm doing it right, just awkwardly. I'll just keep practicing it this
way. And I think you are right about my tab, one too many notes right at
the start.

Hi Oscar,

Doing string crossing exercises really helped me a lot with this song.
It really is tricky fingering, but if you pay attention to your right
hand, slow down and then come back up to speed, you'll get it! Oh, and I
thought the extra note was the A at the end of the intro. It should end
on C#.

Take care,

-Susan

That tab is simplified vs what is actually played methinks. We used
to do this until it became clear the harmonies were not gonna work for
us, and it was a bitch to get sounding right live. I don't disagree
with the tab note that this may very well be doubled on the
recording.

I think it's definitely done fingerstyle, and yeah, two alternating
fingers appear to be involved, and it's not straight 16th notes, and
there are hammerons and pulloffs on the g and d string involved that
that tab is missing.

Oh, shit, and I forgot to mention, I play the A string open whereever
that tab indicates 12 in the intro.

Nope, there's not. The tab is pretty accurate, although awkwardly
written. Alternating fingers is the only way to play it accurately,
I've found. Raking just trips you up.

To the OP, practice it slowly and gradually build speed once you
master it at a slow speed. You'll get it.

Bass Player magazine had an excellent transcription of the song a while
ago. Find that and you'll be good to go. The tab that the OP referred to
is pretty accurate, at least the intro section. I didn't look beyond that.

That tab doesn't do it for me at all.

To learn the part, skip the 12th fret A string, lower it an octave and
just play it all between your open A string and notes on the D
string.

The only trick is the little lick at the end, it's a standard blues
lick, 4th, minor third to major third. 12th, 10th hammer on to 11th in
D string tab speak. Actually quite easy once you 've got it.

When eventually you've got the essence of it, then try the "G" and "A"
up an octave in the intro as it is in the track. Still play it all on
your D string.

N.B. The ending riff under the guitar solo is essentially the same
thing, except in "E"

Use a pick. Much easier that way.
