Bohemian Rhapsody

I thought people on this group may like to see the video of my band
playing the full 6 minutes of Rhapsody 100% live start to finish.

* w w w .youtube . com /watch?v=v3qkutvBLSk

We are a 4 piece band. As far as we are aware (after scouring the
internet, youtube, google etc.) there are no other 4 piece bands that
do Rhapsody start to finish without the use of any backing tracks or
vocoders who can actually pull it off. So if you know of any
competition then we want to hear about it!

I'm using a 2x12 EBS combo. I do make a couple of mistakes during the
song but being as I'm also singing lead vocals, which are quite tough,
I'm sure you can forgive me!

hope you enjoy the clip, comments welcome!

First, you get points for even attempting and second, you get points
for pulling it off!
Great job guys!

Excellent in most places, somewhat amateurish in others.
Needs more harmony on the first "movement" ("is this the real life"
etc.).
The guitar and bass are really good and true to the original, but the
*sound* of the guitar comes across as a bit feeble.

My suggestion would be to ditch the strat for this song and get one of
these:
* i170.photobucket . com /albums/u267/rpleavitt/BurnsBrianMayRedSpecial.jpg

Neck and middle pickup, out of phase, for that real cutting sound on the
main lead break. More high harmonics. Then switch to bridge and middle
in phase for the part right after the operatic section, then middle and
neck in phase for the end. That's the way Brian May plays it. The
Burns guitar has the pickups wired in series rather than parallel like a
Strat, which gives it a fuller sound.

And of course you'll need a treble booster ;-)

The weakest parts were the backing vocals and, in places, the lead
vocal. But it is an extraordinarily difficult song to perform
correctly, and I give you guys a lot of credit for making the effort.

If we could persuade our guitarist to spend a lot of money then he
could sound a bit more like Brian May. For us though, this is a side
project for fun, this recording was made at our second gig (this
week), and I doubt we'll do more than 10 gigs before splitting as we
all have other touring commitments later in the year. Thanks for the
advice though!

> Needs more harmony on the first "movement" ("is this the real life"

definitely. We were actually going to do the song without the first
movement (same as Queen and almost every tribute band ever) but
decided a couple of weeks ago before we started gigging that it would
be good to do the full length version. Might add in the other
harmonies later, or drop the intro altogether, haven't decided yet!

Best version of BH I've ever heard, including the original, was the live
version performed by a local female vocal group called "When the Cats
Away". I think they may have been a 5 piece when I saw them.

Listening to a couple of clips (including yours) reminds me how much I
dislike that song. Yours beats the phish version hands down.

This is nice though.

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody

You guys definitely get the Golden Gonads award for even attempting to
do that opera section. As has been noted, not even Queen attempts to
do that live. Kudos!

Since you asked, The Nerds (4 piece cover band) have been playing BR
for 20+ years. There's no audio or video of it on their site, but it
was on one of their (apparently discontinued) CDs. I first saw them
do it circa 1989 and it's still frequently in their set.

I listened, and in my opinion, the song never should have been tried.
You have way too little vocals to do it. The falsetto part nearly made
me piss my pants. I love the way the others just stand there during
the first part. No need to back up the lead singer....naw w w w w w
The singer sounds more like Gowan than Mercury in parts.

Gonna get the intro backing vocals added in at some point, this was
only our second gig and as we had an entire 1.5 hour set to prepare
some things got left out because of time constraints (I already
explained this in a post above). I'll let you know when we post the
next video with the extra backing vox so you can piss your pants some
more.

It does state in the first line of the info text next to the video
that we are actually a Queen/Paul Rodger tribute - I appreciate other
people viewing the vid may also be confused as to why I have no fake
moustache and don't attempt to sing like Mercury, so now that is
explained.
