Bad habit - who would have guessed?

Bad habit - who would have guessed?

My bass playing skills took a serious downturn last month, for a very
strange reason. I had surgery on my left ankle.

How does that effect my bass playing, you night ask? Well, apparently I
developed the habit of tapping my left foot to the beat, keeping time. I
can't tap, and I have to concentrate more on keeping time, and the playing
gets very sloppy (No, the pain meds weren't involved). Of all the bad
habits playing I've seen talked about in this group, nothing made me suspect
that this would have been one of them.

Anyone else have any habits show up in weird ways?

Jeff, if you find anything in your pants after farting that can be
measured with a ruler, well, technically, that ain't a fart. Not just a
fart, anyway.

Re: Bad habit - who would have guessed?

At the risk of getting serious again...

I once played a master class for the world's greatest solo double
bassist (at the time, now retired). I did my piece sitting on a stool
(add punchline here), which is how I always play upright. When it came
time to critique my playing, the first thing he said was, "I noticed
how your left ankle was cocked on the rung of the stool. Clearly not
in a relaxed position. You're holding that position via muscle
tension, and that muscle tension is traveling through your body to
your hands. Try to relax everything except the muscles directly
involved in making the instrument speak. It will improve everything."

I did. It did. He was right.

Maybe this is a Spinal Tap moment and he meant to type 10' which he figures
is a safe distance when he lets one rip as it gives others time to move
further away.

He means the length of the flame when you light it.

Using "effect" when I mean "affect" and vice versa. ;-)

See...I don't see it as an issue. I tap my foot to keep the beat, and
was infact encouraged to do so by my teacher. I've found it very
beneficial.

If you immobilize the foot, can you still play as well? I can't. Nowhere
close. If I were making money playing, well, I'd have to be the last bass
player on the planet for someone to pay me to play...

I like to masturbate while playing bass naked, and I have to have
surgery on my testicles because they keep getting caught in the
strings and getting over-vibrated.

True story!

Just play naked and let your pecker swing like a metronome.

Works for me at least...kinda scares the audience though.
