I just quit my band

I just quit my band

It feels good but in a way I feel a little sad.

We had been together for 10 months, only played 1 gig 8 months ago. Though
they talked about seriously, we never really did much at practice, just
fooled around. We learned a few new songs but barely. We supposed to be
the modern equivalent of their oldy classic rock band but ended up playing
mostly moldy oldies. If those guys start gigging, the are going to end up
competing against themselves!

It was fun for a while be I saw the writing on the wall. I have my church
praise band that will keep my chops up with weekly gigs and weekly new
music!

Two years ago, I practiced with some very competent players who were really
perfecting 4-5 songs every week. I mentioned showcasing a few songs at a
local open mic event, to get some name recognition going before we were up
to speed with 40-50 songs. This idea always earned blank stares, and the
others would change the subject. I finally found out that they fully
intended to stay in the basement for "as much as a year, or however long it
took to be ready". I was outta there after a month.

Now, the first question I ask is "How long do you envision it taking to be
ready to shake & bake?" If the answer is more than 3 months, I pass.

Always remember John's First Theorem of Band Rehearsal:

The amount of gigs any given band will play is INVERSELY proportional to the
amount of time they spend rehearsing.

It hasn't let me down yet.

As I see it a local 'open mic night' is an ideal and easy venue to see
how you're coming on, and how you actually gel together as a band -
rehearsing just doesn't cut it.

If they can perfect 4-5 songs in a week, then they could easily do such
an event after a single week.

Imagine spending a year rehearsing, then you eventually get to do a gig
and you're useless on stage - what a waste of a year.

The open mic I go to here is perfect. Even though it's Tuesday, there's
still a small group of swing dancer addicts who can't stay home for even one
night, and there's othing else danceable happening on Tuesdays around here,
so there's a built-in audience. They're a great barometer of a band's
quality. And, they've seen so many bands & players that we can actually get
interesting feedback from them (if we ask).

Sounds like you're out of a bad situation then. Of course maybe you
missed your opportunity to be a leader and get them to focus. But
sounds like they were maybe more interested in partying than playing.
So if you're more interested in playing, best of luck getting into a
better situation.
