I need a hand transplant

Ever had a simple bass tune which you just cannot play? You know how to play
it but you just can't. My example is 'Planet Earth' by Duran Duran (hear it
on Youtube). John Taylor plays a da da dum da da dum rhythm which my hands
refuse to play it at the correct speed.
Now for some grave-robbing for a new pair of hands (maniac laughter).

This may sound odd, but how old are you?

If you are under 30 and grew up with Nirvana, Green Day and the like, the
whole "shuffle" thing is probably foreign to you; whereas for guys who grew
up and blues-based rock and metal, it's one of the first things we learned
how to do.

Do enough listening to that genre, and it will come.

The original sounds like it was recorded with a pick,
not easy to do the same thing fingerstyle.

If you hunt round Youtube, you can see John Taylor playing it fingerstyle
and also a video from a kid called Metalgopher who can play it effortlessly.
Makes me sick :)

THIS live version

* w w w .youtube . com /watch?v=NrsPY5IofEM

sounds like the record, but he's using a pick there,
check him at 1.17

this other live version

* w w w .youtube . com /watch?v=wNPNYGzvLSg

doesn't sound anything like the record,
he appears to be playing straight 8ths fingerstyle
with the guitarist doing a muted part over it,

that's enough hunting for today

This is the perfect opportunity for you to start playing with three fingers:
'Dum' with the index, first 'da' with the ring and second 'da' with the
middle one. After awhile it will play itself :)

If you look at the kid playing it (Search 'Duran Planet Metalgopher' on
Youtube), I reckon he is playing it with 2 fingers. Sadly I can't play it 2
or 3 fingers.

Wanna be even more depressed? Try duplicating Rocco Prestia's bass line on
"What Is Hip?" (Tower of Power). Eat a good breakfast before trying. Simple?
Yeah. Easy? No.

Every time I crank the disc "Soul Vaccination Live" my right forearm starts to cramp
just by listening in under three songs :D

Yeah, I used to try that. I got pretty close but never quite got
it.

There is a lick that Jaco plays in Birdland that goes from one of the
lowest notes to one of the highest seamlessly. It seems impossible.
How does he get his hand there so fast? There must be some trick to
it.

I know the trick, but I can't tell you what it is. It's classyfied.

I play those with 3 fingers. I also play the fast disco octaves with 3
fingers. I now really like to play with 3 fingers. It spreads the
effort on more muscles. I can play without tiring for hours now.
