Guitar Center Strikes Again

Guitar Center Strikes Again

Well, not that this is a new phenomena, but Guitar Center has decided
that my blood pressure is just too low and has set out once again to
raise it to steam boiler levels.

My gigging rig is heavy, heavy, hernia-inducing heavy, so after
reading about MarkBass for about the tenth time today, I figured God
was sending me a sign and that I must go to GC and buy one. Of course
all the salespeople are playing instruments and the 1 X 15 that I
really want is out of stock, but I had already made up my mind that if
I couldn't get the 1 X 15, then the 1 X 12 will be mine.

After waiting about ten minutes, a bewildered youth approaches me.
Turns out he is a salesman. "Is there one in a box?", I ask, pointing
to the 1 X 12, already knowing the answer is no. "Just a minute, let
me see." Ten minutes pass. "No." Arggh.

"Well, can you take off a few dollars since this one has been sitting
here for a month or two?", I ask, knowing my optimism will soon be
dashed to the ground by the 13 year old waiting on me. "I'm new
here," he says (what a surprise) "Let me ask my manager." Wait ten
minutes. "No."

"Can I see the manager?", says I, in my most restrained, biting my lip
until it bleeds, voice. "Yes, he's in there.", pointing to an office
with a 17 year old senior manager. I gird my loins for battle and
enter the 17 year-old's sanctuary. Amazingly, he is respectful (Well,
hell, I probably remind him of his grandfather.) and convinces me that
the unboxed unit will come with all manuals and warranty paperwork -
even a MarkBass sticker! Oh, boundless joy! I agree to wait, while
the 13 year old retrieves said paperwork.

After 20 minutes, during which I watch 3 other salespeople interrupt
MY PARTICULAR IDIOT, I am informed that they can not find this
mythical paperwork. I leave the store, sans amp, defeated and humbled
once again by the unmet promise of Guitar Center. Aye, she is a cruel
mistress.

Jeff

You should have returned with a baseball bat and given a few lessons in

Too bad you weren't in Hollywood, they had a JB. See my "Un-gassed" thread.
Updated just now.

Re: Guitar Center Strikes Again

Consider yourself lucky. Speaking from the other side of the fence: you
don't want "the one in the box" because it's shinny and new and has all the
paperwork.

You want it because 25 teenagers have not slapped "Higher Ground" on it for
hours on end, with the EQs and volume maxed out past clipping, trying to
get it to distort...using a speaker cable as an instrument cable...

I waited for a good while to get a Markbass in the box from My GC. I wanted
the 15, but while I was waiting I found I liked the 12 better - which was
good because it was in stock.

Just a little FYI: I've been told they can't discount on markbass, so get
them to throw in some other crap like strings, or do an "out the door"
without tax.

Also, I heard that only managers can deal on price now, and that they are
severely constrained as to the discounts they can give.

GC has apparently been bought. I am unsure as to what will replace it in
the
marketplace.

I've been through a few acquisitions. They simply don't work. In order
to entice the buyers, the sellers pump up the book on the item for sale,
and it very soon becomes worth more dead than alive.

Apparently, inside every accountant is a latent instance of Hernando
Cortez. Cortez, Cortez.

Remember kids, conquered peoples should stay conquered.

Well, Shea, if you can't see how Cortez relates to Jeff's negative
experience at Guitar Center, well, I just feel sorry for you. It should
be obvious.

Companies are never quite the same after an acquisition.

It still never ceases to amaze me how many retail operations, the sole
objective of which is to separate customers from their money, are so bad at
actually doing so.

And that GC is even worse than the rest of them.

The amount of time I've spent standing there waiting for them to complete
the actual mechanism of taking my money if frightening.

This was the sort of time where people were prone to say
'God only knows'. However, it was generally conceded
that if there was anything God didn't know, this would most likely be it.
