I no longer need a hand transplant

I posted a couple of days ago because I could not play Duran Duran - Planet
Earth bass like John Taylor. Many thanks for those who pointed out that the
rhythm should be played with 3 fingers (either thumb12 or 234). I was trying
to play it with 2 fingers like John Taylor in the video (see Youtube) which
is impossible. When I switched to T12 I could play it OK. So, is John Taylor
playing it on the original track? I suspect not.

Ehrm, why shouldn't he be? It is not that difficult playing it with two
fingers.

Everything's relative man. That Metalgopher geezer on YouTube isn't
even playing in time and his attack/plucking is dull, nothing like
the
bright pick sound on the original record. Did anyone here say 234?
I don't think so.

In the record sounds like a pick to me (attack), and it is quite easy that
way.

No it's not. I followed those YouTube links to remind myself of how the
tune actually went (I'd misremembered it as some disco octave type
thing) and had a quick go. It was easy enough to play with two fingers,
although I'd have to practice it a little to keep it up, on tempo, for
the entire song without dropping any notes - but if I was 20 again that
wouldn't be so hard.

Perhaps astonishingly Duran Duran weren't one of those manufactured pop
bands prevalent at the time, and there's absolutely no reason to suspect
that they didn't play on that recording. I snuck into a Duran Duran
soundcheck at Aston University in 1981 (the week Planet Earth started to
crawl up the charts) primarily to hear John Taylor as I'd heard he had a
Wal bass - I managed to hear his sound check before I was asked to
leave. He was a surprisingly good player even then.

I'm sure John would have played that line himself, persevere with the
two finger method and you'll be able to as well.

Despite the panty moistening pop stardom they enjoyed when I was in
grade school, Taylor is indeed an excellent bassist. One listen to
the line he wrote for Rio ought to convince anyone on the fence about
this. That thing friggin smokes.

The first Power Station album, and some of his solo stuff, have him taking a
lot more on than he did in Duran Duran. He's also got a great funk sound
going on the Notorious album - the one after they disappeared the first
time.

Shit I didn't know he was in Power Station. Heh.

Then again after that totally bitchin vamp and finally the drum intro
to Bang a Gong, was it all downhill? I couldn't really get into them
in general and I may have even had the album? Or hell maybe that was
one of the handful of 45's I had, and I only had that single (albeit
at a time when single vinyl was well on the wane).

Best Regards,

2nd album was Bernard Edwards on bass - last thing he recorded, I believe.
Yes, they had a 2nd album, it just got released about 9 years too late.
Taylor has writing credits, but didn't play on it.

Duran Duran really played the image thing hard, but had a lot of skill
behind it.

Uhhh, if you'll take a couple of minutes and look at LIVE versions of
the song (on youRtube), you'll see he uses a PICK. Even so, that is
NOT impossible to play with two fingers. Live though, it's all about
attack and being heard above the mix, which is why he probably chooses
to use a pick for it.

That is one of the reasons I posed the question. While it is relatively easy
to play with Thumb12 (and when you actually play along with the original it
fits very easily with being played that way), I am surprised that the
original video shows him playing it with 2 fingers (not impossible to others
but impossible for me) and in later live versions with a pick (which can be
done but also does not sound, to me, like the original). This is why I
wondered if someone else played the original and he adapted it later to his
own style. The other alternative is that he likes to play it 2 or 3
different ways.
