More MarkBass magic

Just out of curiosity I tried it for guitar. My Strat and also my Martin
acoustic w/Fishman pup. WOW. Just dry and some knob tweaking gave a
beautiful sounding smooth jazz tone on the Strat. Didn't want to put any
heavy FX through it like distortion. Gonna try the White Falcon but it's
tucked away in the closet and I was too lazy to dig it out. I can see it
really shining though.
Then tried the Martin. What a golden acoustic/electric tone. Don't need it
for electric guitar but I now know I also have a terrific acoustic guitar
amp.

Good point; I've got an Ampeg SVT-3 and the one thing I've never done is
tried one of my acoustic/electrics with it. Tomorrow's project ;-)

My Hartke 2.5XL cabinet had to do duty as a PA speaker at an "acoustic"
gig last summer. It sounded *way* better than the speakers we had.

I didn't spend an awful lot of time with it, but I got it to sound
pretty damned good! The SVT-3 model I have has a channel with normal
bass, mid, treble control and another channel with a 10-band EQ. I
could get pretty good sounds out of each; the EQ channel was marginally
better but probably could have been way better had I spent the time to
dicker with the EQ settings some more. I did manage to notch out a spot
where, if I cranked up on the volume, I was getting some feedback.
Consequently, I had it up pretty high (probably enough so that the
neighbors noticed with the windows closed). If I had it up any higher,
I'd probably start getting that power-tube distortion, which I wouldn't
want with an acoustic!

It definitely beats going through any of my guitar amps. Thanks for the
tip, I don't know why I didn't think of trying this earlier!

Dare you to set the volume at least at "5."

Heh. Had it up to "7" after playing a bit with the EQ to notch out a
spot where it was feeding back. This is with my Ovation; I'll have to
try it again later with my Seagull, which has both piezo and sound-hole
microphone pickups and where you can play with the relative phase of the
two. (I'm hoping to go to "11"!)

If I ran it through the EQ channel at "7" and suddenly turned off the
10-band equalizer, I was able to do a fantastic version of the intro to
the Beatles' "I Feel Fine" ;-)

I think you may like it. Of course bass amps don't have all the usual
guitar distortion stuff, but for clean they are HARD to beat! I use my
Laney combo for my resonator guitars all the time. It's a 1 x 15 but
the 15 is VERY bright and it works very well with a bit of EQ! I do
think the 12 of a markbass would be even better suited. Plus it's very
light weight and has great tone. I hate the price level on the
Markbass, but I can see I'm just gonna hafta bite the bullet and get
one. (or two! :-)

I'm afraid to try it with guitar because the tweeter is kind of
annoying.

You have to take it out of the circuit inside the cab. Tried it.
Made it entirely too muddy on a gig. The 12" has a very low high end
response. It's crossed over at 3.5K but it sounds more like 2K to me.
I've had to settle for rolling off the VLE knob. It works but I'd
rather attenuate the tweeter. Big design flaw in an otherwise great
combo.
