Ric 4001 Pickup Question

Ric 4001 Pickup Question

I have a 1973 Ric 4001 bass in Jetglo w/ checked binding. I got it in
1984 - then in 1986 I had a set of EMG electronic P-J pickups put in.

I kept all of the original hardware and pickups (neck pickup is a
toaster) and am thinking about having the original pickups put back.
It sounds great now, but I kinda think the original setup would be
preferable. Any opinions?

I would definitely put the original pickups and wiring back in! But you may
be a little disappointed by the sound. I love Rick basses (and even have a
few) but they definitely have a biting aggressive trebly sound. They are a
one trick pony but do that trick really well. Like I said, once you put the
pickups back in you will realize why you put the other pickups in. But then
you might really love it.

It seems that every other older Rick bass I have seen has had the pickups
messed with. People want the look of a Rick but the warm sound of a Fender.

Re: Ric 4001 Pickup Question

My Ric had a nice warm sound on the neck pickup, especially with a little
bit of tone knob tweaking, which can be enhanced at the amp. It's just a
matter of tone adjustment and playing style. Go for the originals.

I think everybody here agrees that you should go with the originals. A
Rick is unique especially in the pickups and that is it's appeal. If
you want the sound of a Fender, buy a Fender.
