A Google search revealed this: "Ebanol is a synthetic material constructed
of compressed paper and resin. It has been used as fingerboard material by a
number of manufacturers, but is best known from its use on Steinberger
instruments."

Some people say that there's no reason to go to flatwounds with an ebanol
fingerboard because roundwounds won't damage it. I'm not sure about that.
Anyone have any experience whether roundwounds do or do not chew up ebanol?

I have 20 +yr old kramer fretless that was strung with rounds. Some wear on
ebanol neck but not worth mentioning...........and thats with alot of play.

I am not sure of what exactly it is, but it is "bowling ball" type material.
I assume that you are referring to an All Parts neck. I had one but got rid
of it. I am not a big fretless player but found the fingerboard to be too
"plasticy" feeling. Your mileage may vary.

I put an ebonal fingerboard/maple neck on a fretless Jazz I built for
my student. It's strung with rounds and it's holding up well. It's
actually a very nice sounding and playing bass.

Certainly different than rosewood or ebony, but she's very happy with
it, and I would consider building one for myself if I didn't have too
many as it is.

Re: Ebonal fretless neck

Ebonal is a phenolic synthetic material used for fingerboards for
at least 20 years. I have a custom- built 5 string with an
Ebonal board fitted with r/w strings that shows insignificant
wear. Playing characteristics are similar to a maple board ie
bright with good sustain due to the very hard and glossy finish.
Mighty Mite offer several guitar and bass necks with that option
of fingerboard as do others.
