More Barry Manilow

I don't know why I didn't recall this while we were discussing/beating
up Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond last week, but Mix Magazine's "Classic
Tracks" featured "Copacabana" in the January issue. I don't know about
anyone else, but I always gain a lot of respect and appreciation for
songs after I read the "Classic Tracks" article about them -- even songs
I don't really care for. Hell, maybe especially songs I never really
cared for. Here's the article:

Every month, I get a big charge out of "Classic Tracks," take a look and
see if you don't find it fascinating, too. Here's the whole she-bang:

I dunno. I guess I never knew that the reason "Copa" was a huge hit
forever was that they switched to two Sennheiser MD-421s on the piano
to bring out more attack!

Of course, IMHO Manilow was never more at his peak of musical ability
and creativity than when he was doing advertising jingles. I'm
serious! These days he's just coasting. All the old drive seems
gone.

OK, now let's go beat him up!

Brian,
I haven't read the article, but will try to do so soon. Thanks for
posting it.

But my 2 cents on this topic is that unlike many (and probably like
many others), I have a lot of respect for Manilow. He understands what
sells, he constructs very good songs (simple and diatonic, but good),
is definitely NOT full of himself (in fact, seems like a very nice
guy), but also that he has written numerous excellent jingles. I can't
imagine having to take a lyric like "Like a good neighbor, State Farm
is there." and turn it into a melody line that sticks in your head
forever. Does he push the musical envelope? Never. But that shouldn't
be necessary for respect.

If I gave the impression that I don't like Barry Manilow or his music,
let me correct that right now! I've been a fan of his from the
beginning. I even went to one of his shows with my wife, which was a
disappointment because (1) It was astonishingly, painfully loud (!); and
(2) he is apparently a cult figure to legions of middle-aged women out
there, who just made the show annoying with all their screaming and
jumping around.

There are very, very few kinds of music that I don't like. Even though
I'm mostly a jazz player these days, I'm a big sucker for catchy pop,
and I'm not ashamed to admit it!

Me, too. I'd rather listen to good pop than most anything most of the time.
Currently playing: Crowded House.

Nope, you didn't give any impression that you're anti-BM. Rather the
reference to the BM trashing thread that I apparently missed made me
stick in my opinion. I guess there are lots of us who like the man.
I'd love to do a tour! (Barry, are you reading this?)

Those women are convinced, to the last, that he is not gay.

My wife met BM when she was a little girl. After he left, she asker
her father why Barry has pink hair.

Re: More Barry Manilow

I've always had a sneaky liking for
his tunes...I like big production numbers.
He is a consumate musician (like him or
loathe him...) so I'm told.
I used to gig with a keys player by the name
of Andy Rumble who MD'd for BM on a UK
tour a few years back..a very difficult job
made a lot easier by working with a superb
musician who was a gent to boot....no Big Time
Attitude. The dough was very good too!

Re: More Barry Manilow

Yeah, I love the big band sound from some of his things, maybe my offhand,
no thought fave is "When October Goes".
I think I remember reading that he wrote that entire album in a week's time
or so.
