Palmystery Tour

Hey guys,
My computer decided that it doesn't like to turn on anymore, so I've
been without for almost a week. Today I finally got a new fan installed and
so far, so good!
I spent last weekend hanging out with Victor Wooten on his Palmystery
tour so I thought I'd give you guys a update.
Friday afternoon I went down to Eugene with a friend who plays keys in
the bar / wedding band I work with. He's never seen Victor before but his
best friend lives down in Eugene and is a big fan. We got there early and
met up with his friend before the sound check, then all went in together.
The band was late while Victor did a clinic so we watched the sound crew
tuning things and marveling at the ridiculous echo the room produced.
Eventually the band filtered in and they ran through some new songs.
After they finished Victor brought me up to see the new Boss
multi-effects pedal he's using this tour. It looks very complicated but it
also has some great sounds in it. Victor and Anthony are using different
bass cabinets every night, so I got to check out the rig. While we were
standing on the stage I introduced my friend to Joseph Wooten and he wound
up gathering us all around the keys and giving a funky clavinet lesson.
The show that night was great, they are doing all new material and
almost nothing from the earlier records. They are doing some songs that
have never been recorded (though they have been out on previous tours) and
almost everything from the new album. There is some mind-bending layered
time stuff going on, and when it's in 4/4 it's either greasy funky or crazy
fast. Victor isn't throwing the basses around these days or doing a big
stage show, but there are some fun surprises and it's fun to watch even if
the nutty jazz stuff is over your head.
I got back to Portland very late on Friday night, then got up Saturday
and went down for the sound check. They had four completely different
cabinets (I think the whole trailer is full of them) but Victor and Anthony
sounded pretty much the same as the night before. Anthony is doing a lot
more playing and soloing on this tour, it's great.
During the sound check a couple of Victor's friends came in and we
watched together, and the three of us ended up going out to dinner with Vic.
They were fascinating people and we all had a good time. We got back to the
club right before show time, and I picked up a ticket for my favorite
drummer so he could see the show; it was his first time seeing Victor.
The show that night wasn't much different from the night before but they
nailed every song and sounded incredible. Everyone in the band is playing
their butts off and Derico Watson is officially a SuperDrummer. I probably
won't see most of those guys again this year, so it was great to see them do
a couple gigs and spend some time with them again.
A couple days later I rode to a rehearsal with my drummer, and he's a
real country / blues guy, great player but not really into the "out" stuff.
He enjoyed the show and we talked about it a lot, but I was very surprised
when he turned on Palmystery and asked for help counting the tricky songs.
Maybe I can sneak some 7/8 into my solos at our gig tonight. :)
-Jonathan
