Joe Jackson - Look Sharp

Reply from: Jim Carr

Just took a listen to the "Look Sharp" album by Joe Jackson - haven't
heard it in years. I forgot how big the role of the bass was. It had a
great sound.

Anybody know any details about the bass(ist)?

Graham Maby. Amazing. Last week, John Bigboote saw him in concert and said
"I love Graham Maby. I want to have his baby." If Bass Player magazine ever
did an in-depth article about him, it doesn't show up via their search
engine.

In the April issue (Randy Jackson on the cover) there's a short
article on him. I don't know if he would justify a six-page feature
article; he's not flashy or particularly innovative. I just think he's
as close as possible to the ideal that I'd like to achieve: rock-solid
at all times, a great melody/countermelody player when the song calls
for it, great with a pick or fingerstyle. He is absolutely at the core
of JJ's sound, right there with the piano. Good backing vocals, too.
IOW, IMO, the quintessential rock bassist.

One of my favorite albums.
Graham Maby - bass
Gary Sanford - guitar
David Houghton - drums

Those early albums of his had a nice, raw, stripped-down sound.

Graham recently sold the Ibanez Jazz bass copy he used on those early
Joe Jackson albums. Someone in Europe bought it for about $5,500 on eBay.

His tone came from using pick for most everything, and Fender tapewound
strings.

Great player and one of the nicest guys in the world.

Now you know the source of the stunned, "shit-fire--who the f is this
guy and how did I not know about him?" posts referencing Joe Jackson
Band or Graham Maby that seem to occur about once a year here.

Get a copy of Volume 4 adn its accompanying live CD that comes with it
and enjoy.

Yeah, there are lots of no-flash very solid bassists out there. They
don't get famous, but they are gigging all the time and musicians sure
appreciate them.

I'm an old geezer who is still playing. I was a seasoned musician when
Graham Maby "released that album with Joe Jackson".

All I can say to you slappers and poppers is... Learn to play with a pick!!!
For articulation, definition, and intricate bass lines that carry the
tune.... MABY RULES!!!!

Labella's a go.

He's never played with Billy Joel.

Marshall Crenshaw, Freedy Johnston, Natalie Merchant, Joan Baez, etc.
He's currently touring with Joe Jackson in support of the album "Rain".

He does play a Spector 5-string.

Brian R Badger? "Badger" was Graham's nickname....
