Broke a string

We were playing for 30 people. Just at the end of the first set, we
played Lady Marmalade. I have a kind of solo (enhaced groove) in the
middle of the song. I broke the G string. First time for me. I mean,
it's Murphy's law again. First time I don't bring a backup bass. I
never carry spare strings, because I always bring a backup bass...
Short story: it's very challenging to play without that string. Noone
noticed it except the guitarist, who asked if I'd be able to play
without that string. I replied that as long as there are 2 strings
left, I should be able to play...

No fun! That's why I carry strings.

First time in fifteen years... I broke a string Friday night. Was playing
for our extended family... call it a memorial performance, after laying
Grandma to rest. On the next to last song, I broke my C string. Instead of
swapping basses, I played the last song on a "5" string. Had time to switch
to backup bass for encores, however.

Should probably note that the string in question had been on the bass for
almost a year (Black Beauties, from DR), and still sounded great! I just
yanked it too hard on the last chord of the song.

The idea that you could break a string and still have five to play on
kinda blows my mind.

For more than a decade, my main bass has been The Voice -- a Spector NS-6P
Custom. My use of this bass proves at least one of the following:

You CAN use an extended range bass in Blues, if you don't overuse the extra
strings.

I'm as crazy as a loon...

Yabbut, those 'C' strings are kind of skinny and guitar like. Not real
strings at all.

LOL... yeah, they are a bit skinny. And, yeah, 99.9% of everything I do with
that particular string is guitar-like... chords, solos... that kind of
thing. In fact, the song I played sans C string called for some chord
comping above a straight-8th-note bass line. So we missed out on that.
Thankfully, however, I don't work with others who fall apart if the song
isn't exactly the same as the last million times we've played it.
