A Recording (Pro Tools works!)

Well my adventure with Pro Tools continues, I decided to jump right in
and try adding bass parts to some home recordings from the singer I'm
working with. She sent me a couple Mp3 files she recorded at home, just
vocals and guitar, and I plugged my Stambaugh straight into the M-Box
without running it through a preamp or a cabinet. Now that I know what I'm
doing I plan to experiment with using my "gig rig" but to start with
everything is clean, just the bass direct in.

The bass line is my Stambaugh and the little melody underneath is my
fretless Carvin in stereo, run through my Boss Chorus pedal on a single
channel.
We have a couple gigs later this month, including her CD release party.
She recorded the album before I started working with her but the party
should be a lot of fun. Right now there's an acoustic lead guitarist
joining us for most of the gigs, he just solos over everything so there
isn't much room for me to step out. I'm looking forward to booking some
guitar / Cajon / bass stuff later this spring where I'll have more room to
fill space and shift to the melodic side of things a bit more.
My next Pro Tools challenge is to figure out how the looping system
works, I'd like to record some of my solo arrangements without using the old
Boomerang. If I manage to get it together without breaking anything I'll
post some samples on here for critique. :)

Nice little song. Singer reminds me of Taylor Swift. Would love to
hear it w/ drums added. Bass direct in seems to be just fine.
Simpler is usually better, I think.

Nice! She writes good lyrics, sings in tune, plays in tempo. I'm in
love! :) Seriously, I enjoyed listening to that track, very nice.

Re: A Recording (Pro Tools works!)

`

I don't think she writes good LYRICS at all.

She DOES write an interesting story, but then
fails to put it into lyrics. IOW it's still literature,
meaning it's too verbose, too "high toned" etc.
Lyrics would be less cumbersome words and
more ... well ... LYRICAL ! "Vocals" is not a
synonym for "Lyrics".

But she has that cool voice, and to her credit
she has the ability sing all that too-wordy stuff
without fluffing up or getting tongue tied. She
is a very capable vocalist.

I dig the bass support, and the tone, and the
mix, and the rhythmic geetar is fine. Why on
earth she adds a lead geetar on top is just a
mystery, unless she plays noisy bars where
showy geetar is expected, or else no one in
the room will accept you as "the band".

The lead guitar thing is a pet peeve of mine, I'm trying really hard to
not let it mess up the gig for me. Basically she's in a folk cover band
with a buddy of hers who wanted to play some of her gigs with her as she put
together a regular band. But he won't learn any of the songs, he just shows
up with his guitar and asks me "What key are we in?" before every single
song, then solos aimlessly through the entire piece. I just tell myself
that with some rehearsals it will get better, and that down the road we'll
be doing trio gigs without him and those will be good enough to make up for
the nights with him.
I'd never say it to the singer, but the "What key are we in?" guitarist
thing offends the hell out of me. Why should the rest of us waste our time
learning the song, arrangement, and set list if one guys is just going to
noodle over the top of everything? Is he saying his time is more valuable
than mine, or that he doesn't respect the song / gig / music enough to
actually put a little work in before show time? For now I'm just being
subtle and very polite in letting her know how I feel, and if it doesn't
change after a few more gigs then I'll be more vocal.
Thanks for checking out the song.

Re: A Recording (Pro Tools works!)

`

I don't play geetar, but can generally read
the key from a geetard's left hand ... and
I'm no conservatory trained type, far from
it ! So to me a geetard who can't read the
key off a bassist's left hand is very WTF.

Even if he had a set list with keys listed,
and bothered to glance at it, the ultimate
arrangement is to run him thru a volume
pedal [ Ooohhh GAwww WD, NOooo !
my tone, MY Tone ! ! ] . The singer then
informs him that he will do his thing in a
continous stream, and that she will use
the pedal to bring in his material where,
when, and at a level that suits her whim.

I know, I know ..... "When Pigs Fly". But,
we can dream. We gotta have a dream !
