When you're joking or being sarcastic, don't forget to use the little

Hey, I use either a pick or fingers for any given song, depending on (a)
the sound I'm trying to create and (b) the intrinsic difficulties
associated with each technique when applied to the song.

In this case (being a guitarist by nature), I give (b) more weight over
(a). There's nothing intrinsic in the sound of the bass in this song
that leads me to believe that using a pick *intrinsically* degrades the
part.

:-P

I agree with all of that, and I use a pick when the song requires it.
But there is no doubt, not by a long shot, that playing with fingers is
easier and much, much faster. If it isn't for you, then you just need
to practice your fingerstyle more.

You're a recovering guitarist, Rich, I'm glad to see that -- but you're
not fully recovered, yet. :-)

For *you*, maybe.
Try playing Dick Dale's "Miserlou" on, say, a steel-string or classical
guitar using fingertips. Then we can get real about this. p.s...I'm a
pretty decent fingerstyle player on guitar, but I recognize that there
are times when it's not the right tool.

No question, I need to do that. But I'd argue that my skill with a
pick, developed over 44+ years of guitar playing, gives me an advantage
over many bassists when it comes to using a pick with bass. So maybe
you need to practice your bass picking more? ;-)

I hesitate to use the phrase "recovering", since I'm still primarily a
guitarist. But even there, technique "nazis" would be aghast at some of
the techniques I use at times, like using my bare fingertips on a highly
cranked up, overdriven guitar part when I want a more subdued attack
(not to mention wrapping my thumb around the neck and using it on the
6th and sometimes 5th strings). I tend to use whatever works best for
me at any given time (whether on guitar or bass). And yes, I'm still
learning new things every day on both instruments and adjusting my
preferences as I go. It wouldn't be any fun otherwise!

I'm a guitar player switched to bass now play both. I thought about a
pick. I even tried a pick. On this passage I just found the pick way
more awkward.

I do that one without a pick. I just didn't know any better when I
first worked it up. It sounds better *with* a pick, but ...

It all depends on the path we've followed individually to get to where
we are now, I suppose. I learned "Miserlou" probably in late '64 or
early '65, about a year and a half after I started playing. Back then,
I hadn't learned fingerstyle and used a pick for everything. It wasn't
until I hooked up with a folkie girlfriend about a year later that I
recognized the potential for playing fingerstyle on an electric.

One... I was under the impression we were talking about "Sweet Emotion."

Two... I thought we were talking about bass guitar.

Three... You should get to work on your fingerstyle plucking.

Right Mom!

What I really need to do is get a guitarist over here so I can play bass
in a jamming environment. Somehow my bass technique doesn't advance
very fast when the only opportunity I have to play bass is when I'm
alone!

Ironically, the hit "I'm the Man" by Joe Jackson has a rockin bass part
played fabulously by Graham Maby.....

with a pick.

I'm an all fingerstyle player myself, but to go after someone's
manliness based on right hand bass guitar technique choice is, well
rather gay.

(Yes, irony intended just for JimmyM)

Thanks, Todd.
It seems to me that a good number of respectable bass players (Paul
McCartney, for example) frequently used a pick.
It's where you go....not how you get there.
