Indeedly. Check this out:

I was sorely tempted, and I have *no* desire to own a six-string!

I checked those out. The Douglas basses are 34" scale. The discussion
here has sold me on a 35" scale. The Brice are 35", but have a
basswood body. From my experience with my current basses, I would
prefer ash or alder. Just my personal preference. Also, at $300-$400
plus shipping, I could go with a Dean , ESP, or Peavey for about the
same cash.

My bad! My apologies. The Brice basses do not have basswood bodies. I
checked the site late last night and I guess my memory is not what it
used to be at midnight :-(

I would urge consideration of the Brice top end Z6 bass. First because
my experience with Rondo basses has shown that you get a much better
value by going slightly up the lines. My Alder body SX bottom of the
line bass just doesn't have the mojo that my higher end SX that has an
Ash body and cost about $100 more. The first makes a great bar bass
that cost so little you don't have to fear what drunks do it, but the
latter can hold it's own with just about ANY bass out there and still
was a low price.

The Z6 is especially nice in that it adds a couple of features I
really like in addition to the ash body, which is the multipiece neck
and the active/passive switch. That means you never have to fear for
dead batteries and I've sort of grown to like the extra added
indefinable something that a passive bass has over an active one. But
I ALSO like that when you are on a DI into the PA and need to tweek
your tone, you've got reasonable EQ right there on the bass. When you
can't decide which is best the answer is a switch that lets you choose
either! It also is 24 fret and 35" scale which gives a killer B string
and the two octave range up the neck that is just perfect (IMHO) for a
6 string. It also uses those individual saddle bridges that are sort
of getting popular lately. I've got a guitar like that and I love it.
Basically this has to be one killer bass for $400 and that's still WAY
under $1000!

The Dean Custom Q6 at MF, is very similar which has a basswood body
(slightly duller tone IMHO) but has the plus of EMG pickups and a
quilted maple top to die for. But it's about $150 more. More than
worth the asking price, however.

There are other 6 strings out there that you might choose but these
two would be my choice for value. The rest (like say the Tune Alembic
clone) could be a choice if you were into this or that nuance, but as
a newbie I don't think you are quite ready to be making those kind of
choices yet.

Good Luck!

$422.80 including shipping for the Z6. Not bad :-)
