Aah...earplugs!
That's actually another thing I'm thinking of getting

I was the lone worship leader at a church, and when we got a (better)
guitar player I switched to bass, but still sang lead vocal. It took
a lot of practice and the fact that I knew all the songs *very* well,
to get it right.

So, if you think singing the lead and playing bass is hard, try
singing harmony (not a bass harmony) and playing bass at the same
time. I did that on occasion at the old church, but at my new church
I am strictly the bass player who occasionally sings high-harmony.
Again -- the harmony lines have to be known *very* well. It takes a
lot of practice.

Good luck,

Re: Vocals/bass vs vocals/guitar

Ditto. I'm playing alt-country/folk rock without a drummer in 2
outfits. One guitarist breaks time regularly. So I simply can't sing
and be the drum machine at the same time. As it is, I can feel the
lurch if I'm off more than an 1/8 note. Frankly, I kinda like the
freedom to just bow my head and thump away rhythm while on the
stage. : ) Guitar and sing? Sure, since the very first time my
fingers touched the nylon.
