thx very much for the ideas to work on. I know I have cheap cables.
One is Fender brand but they make cheapies too. I guess its a whole
new thread on what cable to buy.
Anyone want to chime in with a few brands, etc?

thx - Craig

Bad cables usually cause crackles and other nasty noises, but rarely
hums - well not if they're actually still getting a signal to your amp
anyway.

It's worth while getting good cables, they crackle less and are less
likely to let you down on a gig - good quality cables and connectors can
last you for decades.

I have a ProCo cable that has lasted for well over ten years - although
one of the connectors needed replacement due to airline damage...

Various people will chime in for their favourite cables - and there
probably won't be any concensus *except* for DON'T buy MONSTER cables.

I think that's as near to being universally accepted lore as anything is
around here.

I wish this word would have gotten to me a few weeks earlier. I bought a
speaker cab and the salesman said "I'll grab you a cable". I didn't really
pay any attention (my fault). It was a Monster cable which I didn't really
think anything about at the time but when I got home and saw the price:
$39.00 for a 3' speaker cable...whoa, now I see why he wanted to pick the
cable.
But I must admit it is a "monster cable". The cord it's self is huge with
a fabric weave cover and gold plated plugs. But I seriously doubt my
GenzBenz amp and home made 1x15 with a Carvin proline speaker is going to
notice the difference. (if you're wondering the cab was a GK 2x10 that I
returned and put towards a MarkBass combo)
