Schmaltz can either be excessively sentimental or excessively florid. The
above isn't sentimental, but it is excessively florid.

It's gold like American Idol... all in the pocket book.

Like I said, you need a dictionary. No definition I found for schmaltz
mentions florid. Schmaltz comes from the Yiddish word for animal fat, so
I have no idea where you're getting florid from.

That said, the lyrics aren't florid either. They tell a story. To my the
lyrics to Copacabana are no more florid than those of Sublime's Date
Rape song.

She heard a noise and she looked through the door.
And saw a man shed never seen before.
Light skin, light blue eyes, a double-chin and a plastic smile.
Well, her eyebrow raised as he walked through the door
And took an empty seat next to her at the bar.
my brand new car is parked right outside. howd ya like to go for a ride?
And she said.wait a minute I have to think.
He said, thats fine. may I please buy you a drink
One drink turned into 3 or 4 and they left and got into his car
And they drove away someplace real far.

But, hey, if you don't like Manilow, that's your loss.

I'd probably say "Date Rape" is a bit overboard lyrically also... and I
like Sublime... but they did have some ridiculous lyrics on occassion.

To me, that's the sign of incredible writing.
A song so good it can rise above and overcome how awful it is.
You want to hate it, but that one time you're drinking a bit and you
can't help 'getting' it briefly (or not briefly).

This may get me into trouble but I've always liked McArthur Park. Or
at least I've never disliked it.

Yeah, Webb wrote some pretty cool tunes. And even Richard Harris's
singing can't conceal the integrity and quality of the underlying tune.
There are some really interesting (and nice) changes in there. I can't
help but think that Freddie Mercury was influenced a bit by it!

I was playing The River in the car last week, and my nine-year-old son asked
me how The Boss got "discovered" - "Was he in a talent show?" Yup, that
damn TV is sending society to hell in a garbage truck.

Of course, Bruce, Dylan, and 99.98% of the world's best songwriters
would never get in the door at the American Idol auditions. Which is
fine, of course, they're still around, and Carrie Underwood
notwithstanding, I don't think many people will be able to name a
single AI contestant in ten years. But our singer also wants to cover
a Daughtry song, and it's some of the worst shite I've ever heard. The
guy may have pipes, but he (or whoever wrote it) couldn't write their
way out a wet paper bag with a pound of C-4 and the jaws of life.
