This is coming from someone who hasn't enjoyed a moment of TOTAL silence in
over 30 years. Wear them.

I have tinitus. I have worn earplugs at gigs for over 10 years, but I
waited too long to start using them and abused my ears for years
before that at gigs, concerts and with headphones. Now I'm suffering.
The ringing NEVER STOPS!!! Quiet rooms drive me nuts and I cannot get
to sleep unless the TV is on to cover up the ringing. I also can't
handle loud rooms - my ears will actually hurt. More recently I
developed some serious hearing loss when I forgot to bring earplugs to
a concert. My girlfriend gets frustrated having to say things to me
three times before I can understand what she said.

What for ? Drop the rehearsal volume. No need for it to be that loud.
" But I cant play,or get the groove unless its that loud"...BULLSHIT.
Has anyone in your band seen a burst eardrum (thats actually BLEEDING)
from too-highus-volumus?

Dont worry about it. You will lose your high frequencies but today's
guitar players run the highs up to the top so you will be able to
enjoy the rock experience well into your sixties. After that who
gives a shit.

Re: Earplugs - yes or no?

You don't want be rehearsing that loud.... How the f*** do you hear the
musical nuances and tones etc?

earplugs are a must if you cant rehearse properly though... or if you are on
a pistol range.

I'd rather be a pussy than a stupidass.

One thing to remember is if you are going to wear them, put them in before
you start anything. If you play for a half hour then decide to put them in
your ability to keep a good tone will suffer.
I deal with this all the time. I tell the geetarist to turn down and he is
telling me to turn up.

I have used them occasionally, and yes, they take the fun out of
playing. But it beats going deaf. Fortunately, the bands I'm in now
aren't so hardcore with the volume.

I use the soft foam HEAROS when I need 'em. I've gotten to
where I won't play with people who force me to need them
all the time. IMO, they don't reduce the fun factor
all that much, and it's great when you pull 'em out
at the end of the night and there's no ringing.

You are *going* to lose hearing, no matter what, and plugs
just make it happen later in life.

Re: Earplugs - yes or no?

By all means use them. I went one day too long and have permanent tinitus,
although luckily for me I don't think about it most of the time and it's not
as debilitating as it is for some - but high register noises can hurt, and I
bring earplugs not only to play, but to every concert or club I go to. I
keep them in my car.

DUDE! Who ever said they were for pussies?

It isn't just days, either. Try FOREVER. Wear the damn plugs.

I've tried now - but I don't really enjoy playing with earplugs.
Maybe I should just keep on trying, or get the guys to turn the volume
down a bit.

I felt pretty stupid plying with plugs - I couldn't really hear my bass,
so I either have to get used to wearing them, or just turn down the
volume.

I just like to feel the power from the speakers poundiing into my chest
;-/

Let me guess, you've used non-custom plugs?

Read my page, find an audiologist, spend $150, and enjoy.

How much is your hearing worth to you?

I'd encourage you to give customs with a 15dB reduction a try before
giving up on the idea (hearing aids cost north of $1000 btw), and look
at how your amp is oriented and where you stand relative to it before
concluding you can't hear your bass with an ear plug in.
