Years ago I was in the process of putting together a great band. One
of the better drummers in the area had just left her band, and joined
up. I had two great guitar players, and a lead singer who was AMAZING.
We blasted through about 35 tunes the first night we practiced, and
sounded excellent.
Two more rehearsals, everyone's doing their homework, and we're up to
about 50 tunes. Things are going great, and I put the word out that we
had a name, and were ready to take some bookings. At this time,
bookings were generally about 2 months out at the earliest, so I
figured we'd have some time to add some more non-standard tunes.
I get a call from a club asking if we can do a Wed-Sat gig, for GREAT
money, in two weeks. Cool! Chat with everybody, and take the gig.
Unexpected windfall, right? What a great way to start a new band!
Drummer disappears the next day. Three days, three messages, no
response. I knew where she lived, so I head on over and actually see
her sitting on her couch, but she won't answer the door.
By the time the gig actually happened, we were a 4-piece, I was the
lead singer & bass player, and we had drummer who'd never heard any of
the tunes before.
I've mentioned the trainwreck before. Ugh.
In the end, it all went fine, but... wow. What an experience.
