We're talking a cheap system here - the analog front end for this thing
(and power supplies) shouldn't cost anymore than they do on current cheap
desks like Mackie/Behringer.

I'd probably go with a standard keyboard/mouse interface and do
everything with screen real estate. Possibly a ATM style membrane keypad
and screen real estate scheme.
