I don't think is really the bass, by itself, that did the history changing.
It was really the person holding it, that did the history changing.
That person defined what it was to *be* in the music, by how THEY heard the bass in the music.
The instrument was further defined by the players choice and use of amplifier and speakers.
A Jazz bass on an Ampeg SVT yields things worlds apart from the same Jazz Bass on an Acoustic 360.
JS stated an example of the Hofner in the hands of Sir Paul with respect to what the Hofner did in
the hands of others.
If you listen carefully to the sound of the bass in the music of the British Invasion, you will hear
the bass players in England heard the bass in the music differently than we heard it here in the
States.
I have basically stayed all my playing life with the first type of bass I purchased in 1962.
Here is a pix of me with that bass back in the day.

That bass has been retired because of a crack in the neck I never get around to fixing.
Here is my modified original 1966 backup Jazz Bass I've had for many years.
That one bass, with the right vacuum tube amp, can let me do anything.
One bass for everything, and the amp with the EQ to do it.
The last thing required, is the ear to hear it in the music.
Remember, the Strat was just another guitar till Jimi came along.
