Straw Poll: Ideal Rig?

Hi

Forgive me if this is a common posting, I have just found this NG.

But, always interesting to see where all the buzz is and that helps
making a shot list. Interested in anything that makes a nice sound, so
pedals, Midi racks and DI gear all of interest..

Thanks if you respond.

My main squeeze is Marshall JMP-1 tube preamp. Will never part with that.
Gives be everything except the most Fendery sounds, full MIDI control, fx
loops and all. Couple with a poweramp to your taste and a 4x12" and you're
good for almost any sound Marshall.

Epiphone Valve Jr. is a real nice crunch/clean amp to play (with mods for
brightness and crunch). Definitely one of the best buys ever.

An Ibanez TubeScreamer is very often the ticket to give a driven lead just
that extra edge. Great for that, always will have one handy as well.

H&K CreamMachine - a noisy preamp but as a 2W standalone all-tube bedroom
amp (with a cab of course) it will take you to screaming Marshall overdrive
heaven even without waking the wife in the same room. Just incredible for
that. With a 12AX7 and an AT or AU7.

Tech-21 SansAmp - most any versions, I use the Tri-AC - for getting a very
nice and 'real' analog rock sound even D/I or anywhere. Just add FX and
tweaks and it works in a pinch even for recordings.

Behringer Ultra-G D/I box. A cheap box with a cabinet emulator that really
gives a nice facsimile of a darkish, miked 4x12". Often adding some of this
in a mix will work wonders, especially coupled with other cab emus. Cheap,
nice tool which is a must-have in my book.

Well these are my most trusted and used bits of gear. Of course for a main
rig I'd take a nice full Marshall stack...

Re: Straw Poll: Ideal Rig?

My dream rig would probably be a massive assortment of pedals and at
least 2 amps. It would need some kind of elborate switching system to
call up different combinations of pedals. The amps would be a clean
Fender Twin and a dirty Mesa Dual Rectifier. Also, there would have to
be the option of routing the Fender through a Leslie cabinet.

But in the real world, I'm really happy with my POD XT Live through my
Lab Series L7 amp. This amp was originally a combo, but someone
converted it to a head. I use it with an Ibanez 4x12 cab. I can get
every sound I want from sparkling Fendery clean to swirling leslie to
heavy distortion.

I'd go with a late 70's/early 80's 50 watt Marshall 2204 head and an
open back 2x12 cabinet. Most folks like closed back 4x12 cabs with
that sort of amp but I like the... "openness" of an open back
cabinet. Plus, I don't care to lug around anything too big and heavy.

I have a crapload of pedals already but I'd be fine with just my
Analogman King of Tone overdrive pedal; it lets me set my amp pretty
clean then I can kick in one of the two KoT channels or both for three
different overdrive settings. For extra stuff, I have a new Foxrox
Octron 2 that I like a lot, a custom Foxrox Fuzz Face and I'd love to
have a separate Foxrox Provibe pedal outside of my Captain Coconut for
"swirly sounding." That would about cover anything that I need.

Hey Rich,

Have you ever tried a 4x12" with 2 speakers ripped out? They are lighter
than full boxes, but they have a nice airy sound like open cabs, yet they
don't radiate that sound everywhere. I used to play through one quite a lot
and I loved that cab, always tried to buy it but the owner never wanted to.
Had 2x25W greenbacks in it, so with my 100W Fender toob amp they were *very*
responsive as well. Probably the best cab I ever tried. A touch of foam
inside removed the boominess as well.

Since then, I've relied on my 4x10" Marshall modded so it has 1x12" and
3x10" speakers...not open but a light, small package. I even have a little
bit of foam in there.

A mix of speakers or cabinets can bring a realy good sound. A friend
has a 4x12" Marshal and a 4x12" Laney cabinet. Both together are realy
great. The Marschal brings the low presure and the Laney the tight
mids.

I'm using four 1x12" (Marshall 1912). They are easyer to transport.

Yeup definitely. I never liked my open-back Fenders as is, but coupled with
a closed-back Marshall they were pretty damned good.

A 4x12 would be difficult to pack into my Honda. ;)

That's a good idea though, Dee. Another one I have is a 2x12 ported
cabinet that was originally designed for use with a PA system. It
works really nice with guitar but I have to get around to replacing
the drivers in it as I don't care for the ones I have in there now
(old Peavey Scorpions or Black Widows; don't remember which) as they
sound pretty lame next to the ones in my Mesa 2x12 cab. The nice
thing about two 2x12s is that it's modular, a lot easier to tote
around and I bring just what I need.

For me it would depend on the venue, but if it was big enough to allow
me to open up my VOX AC-30 all the way, I'd use that (mostly top-boost
channel) together with the Keeley Java treble booster. That
combination rocks! I've got lots of pedals, but if I had to choose a
couple to use with that rig I'd select the Electro-Harmonix holy grail
reverb, possibly a Boss blues driver for a different OD sound, and a
good compressor to keep a lid on the whole thing.
