Ground hum with Dlx Electric Mistress!!?

Hi,

Very long ago I asked questions about using an Electro Harmonix Deluxe
Electric Mistress flanger for doing ADT-recordings. I got some helpful
information, but for some reason didn't go about testing it until now.

So, I ran the guitar clean into the pedal and two cables into a
portastudio. (One from the flanged out, one from the direct out). And
though this Mistress is a pretty noisy pedal I was surprised to find
this: When I panned the two channels right and left some kind of low
frequent hum (60Hz or whatever it is here in Europe) grow. If I put
both channels in the middle the volume of the hum was a lot lower! But
panned extreme left and right the hum got really loud!

If anybody has an idea why this is happening I'd be glad to know!
Thanks. Any ideas of things I can do to avoid this is also most
welcome.

Thanks,

Carl

That effect is a dead giveaway for the two outputs (on the pedal) being out
of phase.

If the hum in the pedal is generated early in the signal
path - or if you are putting it into the pedal yourself,
from your guitar or other previous device - having the
wet (flanged) and dry (direct) outputs out of phase
with each other allows the hum to cancel when they
are added together by being panned to the center.
When the two outputs are separated by an extreme
left/right pan, you hear hum on both sides of the mix.

Best thing to fix this is to eliminate the hum. If this
is not possible, you'll need to reverse phase on one
of the signals; many consoles have channel phase
reversing switches which allow you to do this fairly
easily.

The couple of EHX pedals I have (Clone Theory, Octave Multiplexer) all have
internal power supplies. I'd think the Mistress would have one as well. The
older EHX pedals were known as noisy.

Hi!

You have to modify the internal power supply. Try to add some extra
caps. Better results with a LC-Filter or a power-regulator.
