Help me understand the repeat marks ...

Wow I'm rusty ...

So I'm trying to figure this out:

* w w w .911tabs . com /link/?274776

(It's cut and pasted below - but you know how the formatting gets a
little wonky in some newsreaders ... the link may be easier).

The tabber has done this in six lines. Line 2 ends with a repeat mark.
Line 4 is labelled "1" and ends with a repeat mark. Line 5 is labelled
"2" and ends with a repeat mark.

LIne 6 is clearly the chorus. Let's ignore that for the moment.

Is the correct way to play this (by line numbers)

1 2 3 4 3 5 3 4 3 5?

Does that make any sense at all? Am I reading it correctly?

The horizontal dashed lines represent the strings of a guitar
e,B,G,D,A,E. I put the open string's note on the left of the
tab(below)
Bar 1----------------------Bar 2------------------
e|-----------------------|-----------------------| highest pitch
B|------3----------3--2--|------3----------3--2--|
G|----2----2-----2-------|----2----2-----2-------|
D|-0---------------------|-----------------------|
A|-----------------------|------------0----------|
E|------------2----------|-3---------------------| lowest pitch

The smallest string is on top, this is confusing, because the fret
board is viewed as though it were upside down.
But once you know that, it works better.

The numbers are the frets to depress that string,.
it is read from left to right, the spacing between the numbers is a
crude estimation of timing between the notes

Below the design on the far right of Bar 4, represents the open
repeat mark,

Bar 3-------------------------Bar 4---------------------------
>> |-----------------------|-----------------------REPEAT OPEN|
>> |------3----------3--2--|------3----------3--2-----||o--|
>> |---------2-------------|---------2----------------||---|
>> |----4----------4-------|----4----------2----------||---|
>> |-2---------------------|-2----------0-------------||o--|
>> |------------2----------|--------------------------||---|
>>
Bar 5-----------------------BVar 6------------------->
>> |------3----------3--2--|------3----------3--2--|
>> |----3----3-----3-------|----3----3-----3-------|
>> |-----------------------|-----------------------|
>> |-----------------------|------------0----------|
>> |------------2----------|-3---------------------|
>> |-3---------------------|-----------------------|
>>
The bars below end with a closed repeat mark.
you would play until you hit the repeat closing(below) at the end of
bar 8, then return to the repeat open marks(bar 4) and repeat that
section,
The open marks at ehe end of Bar 4 are incorrectly placed. Instead of
being at the end of the 4th neasure, the open marks should be at the
beginning of the 5th measure. It would make it easier to understand

Bar 7 ----------------------Bar 8 -----------------------
>> 1.
>> |------3----------3--2--|------3----------3--2---REPEAT CLOSE
>> |----3----3-----3-------|----3----3-----3---------o||--|
>> |-----------------------|--------------------------||--|
>> |-2---------------------|------------0-------------||--|
>> |------------2----------|-3-----------------------o||--|
>> |-----------------------|--------------------------||--|

So you would play bars 1 thru 8 , then return to bar 5 and play bar 5
thru 8 again
A number above the repeat close marks indicates the number of times to
repeat the section.
If it is only to be repeated one time , no number is placed above the
close repeat mark .
So the Number "1" used here is not needed.

After finishing the repeat sections you would continue on to play at
bar 9
>>
>> Bar 9 -----------------Bar 10----------------------
>> 2.
>> |------2----------0-----|------3----------3--2----REPEAT OPEN

>> |-----------------------|-------------------------||---|
>> |-1----------2----------|------------0------------||---|
>> |-----------------------|-3-----------------------||o--|
>> |-----------------------|-------------------------||---|

Once again the open repeat (above) should be at the beginning of
bar 11 (below) and not at the end of bar 10

Here you repeat bar 11,
and repeat bar 13.
Bar 11---------------------Bar 12 --------Bar 13--------

Gotcha!

That you very much. That was exactly the information I was looking for!

(although if anybody feels like listening to the song and pointing out
what lyrics are being sung over bar 9, to help me find it and figure it
out, that'd be helpful, too!)

Wow
Nice song
I have listened several times, and came up with a large part of the
song

STING
"I Was Brought To My Senses"

1 Vocal intro - no guitar
------------------------
Alone with my thoughts this evening
I walked on the banks of Tyne
I wondered how I could win you
Or if I could make you mine
Or if I could make you mine

The wind it was so insistent
With tales of a stormy south
But when I spied two birds in a sycamore tree
There came a dryness in my mouth
Came a dryness in my mouth

For then without rhyme or reason
The two birds did rise up to fly
And where the two birds were flying
I swear I saw you and I
I swear I saw you and I

* Notes
***********************
This is as far as I was certain of,
ran out of time.
Ignore the repeat signs they just confuse everything

If you play along with the bass notes
on the E, A and D strings .
You will hear how it fits in, very well,
you should be able to work the rest of the the music into the lyrics

There is also a quiet lead solo , in the last half of the song
but that was never tabbed by the author.

Bar 9 - The bass notes fit , but I did not test out the treble notes
on strings
e, B and G,

****************************
???
And out of the confusion
Where the river meets the sea

Bar 9 again
|------2----------0-----|------3----------3--2----||---|

Based on chords, I cheated and played two note power chords
instead of the full chord
The full chord was not harmonising very well were not fitting in too

Every signpost in nature
Said you belong to me

I know it's true
It's written in a sky as blue
As blue as your eyes
As blue as your eyes
If nature's red in tooth and claw
Like winter's freeze and summer's thaw

The warmth she gave me
Were the wounds that would heal me
And we'd be like the moon and sun
And when our courtly dance had run
Its course across the sky
Then together we would lie
And out of the confusion
Where the river meets the sea
Something new would arrive
Something better would arrive

Repeat chorus
I was blind but now that I can see
Every signpost in nature
Said you belong to me

I was brought to my senses
I was blind but now that I can see
Every signpost in nature
Said you belong to me...

Thanks for introducing me to the music

Did not see any more posts, from U
So I did not get into it much deeper.
The bass notes were the easiest to match up,

The chords, i think i missed the target?//?
Sting comes up with some good songs.

Believe it or not, I tried that first.

But since I'm having a hard time understanding how to play bar 9, I'm
also having a hard time figuring out what part of the song it is.
