Stop light bulb

Quite some time ago I recall someone posting the procedure to change the
tail light bulbs in a 98 Explorer. I didn't pay any attention to it at the
time, however, I need the info. now. How do I pull up older posts? Or, if
someone could please tell me how to get to the bulb.
Thanks,
Steve

I will try to be more specific.....I removed the jack, I see where the plug
/wiring harness goes through the body. However, I can't determine how to
get the socket out of the body. Does it twist to unlock, or does one just
pull towards the front of the vehicle?

Re: Stop light bulb

on my 2000 Limited, there is a screw (just one I think, maybe two) that you
can easily get to by lifting the tailgate.

remove the screw(s) and the lens will come off with some coaxing. Then just
change the bulb(s).

Re: Stop light bulb

Hi Newman, thanks for the prompt response. Yes, there are two large screws
I can access by lifting the tailgate. After I removed the two screws, I am
still unable to get the lense assembly off. It feels like it is hooked on
the bottom of the assembly, I can't see any other attatchments beside the
two screws. There is a molded plastic pin between the screw holes that
prevent the unit from moving very far. I tried pulling the unit straight
back, but I am afraid of breaking the plastic. Did you have this same
problem?

Re: Stop light bulb

as I recall, there is a plastic screw type of insert that will come out as
you pull on the lens. i believe this is just to keep the bottom of the lens
tightly onto the taillight assembly. on mine, it just pulls out with a
little force.

i double checked the ford manual (on CD) and it says just remove the screws
and remove the lens. that's all. keep in mind that i have a 2000.

Re: Stop light bulb

That did it Newman, I used a large slot screwdriver and worked it out very
carefully. I now have brake lights on both sides <G>
Thanks again for your help.
