The link provided by I_D_I_O_T went to a page that was
nothing more than an echo tank, more idiots posting drivel
within their claque - nothing factual, despite a claim that
two newscasters were reading from a common script. Where's
the beef?
Whether or not the walrus in the Beatles cover-up conspiracy
was Paul, here's a little clue for you all: Sometimes blogs
have an insider group that deliberately trolls other sites
and newsgroups with over-the-top enticements and a link, not
because they necessarily think that anyone will believe or
agree with what's at the other end of the link - quite the
contrary, they're hoping that you don't, because they're
trying to boost traffic counts. Every visit and/or posting
gets counted, and if a reasonable person is foolish enough
to respond on the blog to the effect that they're all
idiots, then that gives the blog's claque an excuse to post
another full round of messages saying that you're the
idiot - thereby further boosting traffic - and back and
forth until the victim gives up.
Sometimes that's for commercial purposes to attract
sponsors, but at the least, they're hoping to show up on the
various reports that track and publish web traffic. Making
it onto one of these lists is the blog equivalent of
breaking into the major leagues.
(Full disclosure: Many years ago, I was astonished to find
myself on one of those lists. I was somewhat far down, in
the 20's, but it amazed me nonetheless. It was during a
week when Tarver and I were cranked up to a full-bore flame
war. Given today's web trafffic levels, I'm sure I wouldn't
have placed in the top 500.)
This technique isn't limited to the konspirowacko sites, but
that's probably what's happening here. If they happen to
attract another Global Village Idiot who is delighted to
find that he's not alone in his fears and delusions, then
that's just an added bonus.
