In Transit Transfers at HEATHROW

In Transit Transfers at HEATHROW

Hi All.
Would appreciate some info from someone experienced with transitting through
LHR.
I am travelling from the USA with B.A. to Athens via London (LHR). I arrive
into T4 and have to go to T1 for the onwards flight to Athens.

My questions are:-
1/. Basically, do I stay airside all the way through? ( ** I hope somehow
**)
2/. Would my luggage be checked through to ATH from the USA, and therefore
no need collect it, and to clear customs or Immigration for UK?
3/. If I stay airside, if not officially entering UK, how do I transfer T4
to T1?

I read that the terminals are connected via train! How is staying airside
accomplished?
My B.A. tickets give me a 1.5 hours connection time, so I'm hoping to find
out what happens before I arrive.
. I'd hate having to queue somewhere, and having to ask questions later if
timing is going to be complicated..

Many Thanks

You will get your bag checked through to Athens and you won't need to
collect it at LHR. You will not need to go through Customs or Immigration
but yoou will have to go through a security check. You will transit via the
LHR Flight Connections Centre - look at * w w w .uk-air . net / and choose
the "LHR Transfers" link at the left. You will be transferring from T4 to T1
International.

Yes you do. Well, you *can*, anyway.

Yes, your bags should be checked through to Athens from your point of
origin, and you should not need to collect them or clear customs and
immigration to enter the UK.

When you get off the plane at T4, follow signs for flight connections.
This will take you through the terminal to a gate where you will board a
bus that will take you through a tunnel under the south runway to the
flight connections centre, a building between T1 and T2 that processes
passengers transferring between flights. In the flight connections
centre you will go through security again, and then you will be able to
follow signs to your gate in T1. You will stay airside the whole time,
and emerge in the airside departure area in T1.

It isn't, if you connect between the terminals by train - that
connection is landside. It's simpler to stay airside and connect via the
bus to the flight connections centre.

1.5 hours is fine, assuming no delays to your incoming flight. It's
nowhere near the minimum allowable connection between T4 and T1.

You can use the Heathrow Express or the Underground to get from
terminal to terminal (I'm not sure if T4 is back on the
Underground yet), but either will require you to leave airside
and go through customs and immigration.

Follow the "Connections" signs and you can take the airside bus
from terminal to terminal; you will still have to go through a
security check, though. That bus sure does wind around through
tunnels and stuff.

Kev: As others have said, you will have to pass through security screening
again. Therefore, make sure your carry-on luggage complies with the
security regulations for those departing EU airports; the full regulations
are here:
* w w w .dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/airtravel/airportsecurity?view=Standard

Essentially, no liquids in containers more than 100ml, and *one* carry on
item only [and that means ONE - not a bag + a laptop bag, not a bag + a
ladies purse [unlikely I know for you], not anything + anything else - one
item only]. I'd advise you not to purchase any liquid duty free at the US
departure airport or on board either, as although there's an exception for
this in the rules, you might have difficulty at the transfer point.

Also, others have said 1.5 hours is "nowhere near" the connection time -
that's not true. The minimum connecting time is 75 minutes, and 90 minutes
is a valid connection but it could be tight enough. From arrival, it'll
take you 10 minutes to deplane, another 10 to walk to the bus departure
point, probably 15 minutes waiting for and travelling on the bus to T1 - 35
minutes so far - and the security line at the Flight Connections Centre can
be long! Don't hang around until you are through security and heading for
your departure gate area is my advice. The good news is that once you clear
security at the FCC you're pretty close to there...

This is nice and clear:

You must really love commas and hate capital letters.
