What is the TSA's policy on spacebags?

Reply from: Robert Nicholson

so I'm flying JAL to asia soon and a lot of what were are packing.
mostly all clothes is going in spacebags.

Is the TSA going to open these once we get to the airport? Obviously
that completely defeats their purpose.

When I moved I packed all my clothes in space bags. They're clear, so the
TSA can see what's there - you shouldn't have a problem.

No, but that's why god invented x-rays.

If so, then why would it matter if the bag was clear?

Some folks at work suggested they had heard many stories from people
saying that people have
had to open their spacebags at the airport.

Conspiracy theorists will summize that the airlines simply want the
passenger to have to check
in more bags in order to take what they want instead of maximizing the
space of the luggage they
are already taking.

That kind-of sounds like they were using them for carry-on. no one cares
about what's in your bags until after you've checked them in and they've
disappeared.

If you use the travel bags which are evacuated thru a one way air valve
you just reseal and squeeze. I never could understand expecting to find
a vacuum when getting ready for the return trip.

What's so hard to understand? We're traveling to visit my wife's
family in Asia who surprise surprise have a vaccum cleaner.

the travel spacebags don't use a vacuum cleaner, you roll &
squeeze the bag to get the air out of it. if TSA opened one of
the home storage spacebags that was sealed with a vacuum if it
had stuff like fleece it could expand too much to get it all back
in the suitcase.

Zackly. that's why I bought the roll-up sort. They're analogue!
When you have lots of airy stuff, like fleece, wool, ski gear etc, they
really are amazingly effective. Last winter I'd looted a knee-high pile of
new clothes (bloody factory outlets) and the pile vs my bag was a horrible
prospect. So I went to wal-mart and got some, and the pile shrunk and
everything got home.

I'm relatively confident my parents have a vacuum.

??? The airlines care about the *weight* of checked luggage. Using
space bags or regular bags doesn't change that (other than the weight
of the bag itself which is insignificant).

space bags mean you can fit more stuff into your bag, so you don't have to
take more bags. I use them when returning from the US, when I've bought a
LOT of clothes. They squash down in their space bags, so they all fit. They
still come in under the (annoying) 50 lb weight limit the US domestics have
imposed.

I suspect you don't understand what space bags are? They give you the
ability to put more weight into the bag.
