How long before I may re-enter the UK?

How long before I may re-enter the UK?

Howdy. :-) I'll be leaving the UK soon to take
care of paperwork back home in the US (I'm
currently a tourist in the UK), but I would dearly
like to re-enter the UK on a tourist visa (well,
passport stamp) at the earliest possible
opportunity. Is there a minimum length of time I
must be away from the UK before I can re-enter
on a six months tourist stamp?

I can appreciate that immigration wants to make
damn sure that: a) I can afford to sustain myself,
and b) actually intend to leave - and that's fine.

For tax purposes, the rule is usually no more than 6 months in any one year
period, but you aren't supposed to be working on a visitor stamp anyway.

I suspect that also applies to self supported visits. Interpretation of whether
that means 6 month in a calendar year or rolling 12 months is also subject to
interpretation by different countries.

I'd start here

* w w w .ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/lawandpolicy/immigrationrules/part2

and see where that gets you.

If you obtained a visa to enter the UK they are single use and if you have
entered and left (except to travel within the EU) the visa is not re-useable.

If you obtained a multi entry visa there is no minimum time between use.

If you are American and just entered as a normal tourist, again there is no
time limit between such visits. However the immigration officer may well
question you to satisfy themselves as to the answers to your questions A and B
If they are not satisfied especially the question B they will refuse entry.
