But the airlines only care about the weight. So what do you gain? 2
regular bags at 20 lbs each is the same weight as one space bag at 40
lbs.

Or if they only want to carry one bag, they might have only carried 20
lbs instead of 40. I would guess that people would tend to carry more
weight if they used these bags.

My post was in direct response to someone saying that it might be an
airline conspiracy to force people into checking more bags. Completely
illogical statement.

Point is that packing the same weight into a smaller space does not
help. Further it might make it illegal in places like Australia that
put a "per piece" weight limit on checked bags.

When I used space bags, my big bag was still just on the US domestic limit
(which is lower than Australia). But without the space bags, there's no way
all that stuff would have fitted in my bag.

I didn't have a problem last April (and being foreign, they check my bags
religiously) and used a lot of space bags (did too much looting at the
factory outlets). They can see what's in there, pretty well.
