I've often had to travel further. Indeed, I'm regularly obligated to travel
out to Versailles or Disneyland, both of which are more than ten miles from
Paris. I just don't like it.

IIRC, you don't like women, good food, people, warm weather, alcohol,
or job interviews either.

A colleague of mine did BHD-LHR-SYD-CBR-SYD-LHR-BHD in BA-J last October and
it came to around £7,000, so this is feasible.

No "proper plans in place"? How often does ANY airline have
a passenger die in transit? (It really doesn't seem the
sort of event for which advance planning would be given
priority!)

All major airlines have had experience with mid-air fatalities. There
are procedures in place, the cabin crew are so trained, and it looks
like this airline followed those procedures.
