Continental First(?) Class Redux

Good point, Mike. When you fly to Europe, say, in Air France's
Business Class, and then transfer to a European flight on the same AF,
you end up in the front cabin, which, however, does not differ in
terms of pitch and width (six seats across on a 737 or 320) from the
Economy. The only sign that you are in Business is a flimsy curtain
between it, and the rest of the cabin. The difference is extreme.
Speak about apples and oranges.

Another example: you may fly a decent business class on an
international Thai flight, but when you board a domestic Thai flight,
say, from Bangkok to Chiang Mai on a rather old A300, the contrast is
almost as dramatic.

International Business Class is generally much better than Domestic Coach.

Well, you've already been berated for comparing apples and
oranges so
I'll leave that be for the time being. But even beyond that, I think
you'll
find this general effect is true in any similar context. Domestic/
short haul
"First class" is always a bit of a pale with respect to longer haul
version.
Truth is you'll find a similar effect on trains. On relatively short
haul,
low speed trains, I've often been advised by europeans not to bother
with first class seats.

This, I think, is where there is some legitimate complaint left on
this
topic. One has always been paying predominately for the room/comfort
with a "first class ticket" and the rest of the perks were just that,
perks for having paid so much for a ticket. Most domestic airlines
in
the US long ago changed the name of their forward sections to
"business
class" partially to admit to the distinction between truly first class
seating
and what was selling on the short haul routes.

Even of the same airline.

One thing to consider however is that other than the truly long haul,
transcontinental flights in the US, you are on short haul routes
as compared to other parts of the world. There are asian and
airlines that have little if any "short haul" in their structure and
so don't really have a reason to differentiate between their
short haul FC and their longer distance international product.

Really? Which ones? AA, UA, DL, and CO call their front cabin First Class.

R's,
John

Checking at Delta, they listed a choice called "business/First"
There
are very few 3 class domestic flights. The vast majority are coded BC.

Let's forget the 3 class domestic service, which really isn't the
standard domestic FC. Now, if you look at the reservations screen, it
shows First/Business. Ok, now try booking an actual reservation in
'first/business". Try something like SJC to DEN
You will see that you will end up in First Class.
2 class domestic flights will have a section called "First Class", not
Business.

Since you hate Continental so much, why don't you simply fly on another
airline between SFO and Houston? There's always United, which travelers
consistently rate at the bottom of their list of favorites, or you can fly
on a half-dozen other airlines with a simple connetion.

You seem to have a vendetta against Continental, so it seems that you would
be willing to endure a bit of inconvenience to avoid them.

Perhaps you simply desire some sort of Zen experience by persisting in
flying Continental to morally better yourself?

Sheesh. Next time connect on UA. Your KrisFlyer elite card gets you
into the Red Carpet club, you can credit the miles to your KF account,
and you'll get to see just how crummy domestic US first class can be.

*pathetic rambling snipped*

Once again Tchiowa, who is infamous for HATING Continental, graces us
with his presence and spews forth his dislike for them - yet continues
to fly them.

Tchiowa...next time, fly another airline. There are others you know.

We are tired of your stupid comparisons.

Compare apples to apples - not oranges. Domestic "First Class" on a 3 hour
flight where virtually no passengers actually paid First Class but are
frequent flyer upgrades is not intended to be similar to international
Business Class on an 18 hour flight between the U.S. and Singapore where the
fare is 10 times economy. And you do get wider seats and more legroom.
Comparing domestic First Class in the U.S. with intra- European business
class (generally the front part of an economy 3-3 cabin reconfigured to 2-3
with convertible seats- and U.S. First compares much more favorably.
