Two things come to mind. First, these people that are going to enter
Progressive's contest are likely to be wannabes with a magical black box
that the judges are going to crack open and then laugh their asses off
at what they see. Second, Progressive knows the odds of them losing
their $10 million is slim to none. It is an advertising gimmick.

Skeptical is a better term. Either way, I, or your engineer relatives,
aren't holding our collective breath waiting for a 100+ mpg ICE.
Especially, one conceived by a mechanic using a low tech Mustang. I
guess since he was featured by a TV station he has instant credibility.
Here is a quote from the WGAL web article:

"Pelmear told television station WNWO that the car hasn't traded power
for miles per gallon. Pelmear said the car has 400 horsepower, goes well
over 100 mph and can go from zero to 60 mph in three seconds."

What are the odds this mechanic has a 400 hp, 100+ mpg, 0-60 mph in
three seconds Mustang siting in his garage? The very claim is beyond
being laughable. It is clear that the reporter that wasted their time
on this story has about as much knowledge of mechanics as my cat.

I look at a mega car company like Toyota that gets 55 mpg from the next
generation Prius, their high mpg wonder hybrid. How much R&D have they
put into that car to get that mpg rating? More than the entire annual
budgets of many states.

Now here comes a mechanic in Ohio that takes an ancient Mustang and
works his common man knowledge on it to get 110 mpg from it. When will
common sense take over and keep us from giving these snake oil salesmen
their 15 minutes of dubious fame. I wish I had a dollar for ever yahoo
that has claimed to reinvent the internal combustion engine to get
100-200 mpg. I could go pay cash for a Prius with the funds.

The other thing that always accompanies these stories is that the
government/oil companies/auto makers (take your pick or even a
combination of them) are out to stamp out the latest wonder technology.
It is all a self reinforcing delusion. These idiots claim to invent
the new wonder technology, then they claim they have been sabotaged by
big brother and therein lies their built-in excuse to not have to prove
their claims. Meanwhile they probably managed to fleece any number of
people out of some cash. It's funny how these stories always reach a
fever pitch when gas prices spike. To quote PT Barnum, "There's a
sucker born every minute."

it's a simple math trick! He converted his car to E85... so he is
only counting the 15% gas when he calculates his MPG... in one of the
articles he even talks about "equivalent" MPG... so he is getting 110
MPG of GAS not E85.. and actually if you do the math that way most
E85 cars to better!

You are correct, however, the actual mileage for E85 converts to about
77 mpg. The "equivalent" in MPGe refers to the energy produced when a
fuel is burned, not the volumetric ratio of petroleum product to non-
petroleum product. It takes about 1.43 gallons of E85 to get the same
energy from a gallon of gasoline.

Heck, if he got a Ford 5.0L to get 30 mpg in the city and make great
power, that'd be pretty cool to me. Anything more than that is
gravy ;).

Well, considering he won't open the hood... probably stuck a Honda 4
banger in there... slapped some V-TEC stickers on the car for extra
power and called it 400HP...

The guy, IMHO is an attention whore... This guy does a nice job

I read that too. As I mentioned though, I don't hold the fact that the
guy is a mechanic against the claims :). Also, *if*, I say again, *if*
the guy actually has something practical and working, I completely
understand why he's hiding it for now. He's in an open competition and
winning requires keeping secrets.

However, I agree that the guy's working a marketing scheme too. He's
also associated with a venture capital firm (Rocket Ventures) whose
site gives no indication that any of their principals are technical
people.

Perhaps a metaphor might help:

1. Your emails are like sperm, ready to dash out and do their thing.
2. Your ISP is a prick.
3. APEWS is a condom.
4. We are innocent maidens who do not like surprises.
5. You are asking for one teeny hole in the rubber.

You'll have to get us drunk first. - Hey Bub
