Mercon 5 = Honda Z1 ATF ?

Hello

I have a 2004 Honda Civic and would like to change the ATF fluid.

The owners manual lists Honda ATF Z1, so I guess I need to go to the dealer?

I was at Walmart today and I saw Mercon V
ATF and on the bottle it mentioned that it meets Honda Z1

Is this ok? Or do I need to use the Honda fluid?

Is there a big deal, I don't want to do anything foolish, however I don't
want to pay extra for Honda ATF unless I have to.

Get Honda Z1, do it yourself. Just drain-n-fill. SEARCH to find out how
many times to do it. You didn't mention if you have mileage so I can't
suggest.

the car has 65,000 miles.

the current fluid is the original fluid, its never been changed

what do you mean "how many times"?

changing the fluid is simple. Drain, fill, drive.

Replacing the fluid is different. Drain, fill, drive, drain, fill,
drive, drain, fill, drive, drain, fill.

Never flush the transmission. The above is Honda's procedure for
removing as much of the old fluid as is practical, and replacing it with
new fluid.

Coming from a verticle marketing company (Honda), what else would you
expect them to recommend? Do the math; $7 per qt., 3 qts. per change X 4
changes = $84 for fluid. And, they didn't have to do anything but take your
money. ;-> If you have the dealer do it, they can charge another $100 to
take the drain plug out for you! What a racket!!
