fuel still a problem

my 88 yj 4.2 is not getting fuel. ive checked the steel fuel line
that goes back to the tank. i also have checked every line between
this one and the carburetor. none of them are clogged or torn. the
fuel filter is new as well as the fuel pump. im about to drop the
tank and look at the hoses i cant see as of now. i tried this before
but the bolts on the first layer of sheet metal under the tank are
impossible to take off. 3 there and all 3 wont budge. is there
anything else i could check before trying the tank again? and what can
i do to get these damn bolts to move?! when i blow through the gas
line i dont hear any bubbling but know theres gas in it, unless it all
drips out unoticed buti idk how that could happen.

thanks to anyone that can help

Someone has stolen your gas! I have had that happen a few times over
the years.

If you can blow through the line and don't hear bubbles, I would put a
gallon of gas in before going farther.

You could have a broken line on top of or in the tank, but....

You should soak the bolts in a good penetrating oil a few times.

Be sure there is PLENTY of gas in the tank.
Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb AT the carb.
Disconnect the coil wire.
Have someone turn the ignition switch to spin the motor and see if fuel
spurts out of the line.
Be sure the fuel line isn't pointing toward the disconnected coil wire.
If it squirts fuel, you're good to go.
If not, you have a bad pump, or an obstruction.
Pretty simple.

My '81 had two lines connected to the fuel filter on one end, and one line
on the other. The lines in the center of the filter are the pass-through
lines, the line off to the side is a vapor return. This line MUST be
positioned so that it is at the top. Loosen the clamps and rotate the filter
canister so that this line as positioned at 12:00.

Your engine uses a mechanical fuel pump, I think. If so, have you made sure
it works?

I've not done a good job following your exploits under the hood, but it
seems to me that you are spending an inordinate amount of time and effort on
the fuel system. I know you've done lots of stuff, and I can't help but
wonder if you are missing something that is very fundemental. Perhaps you
could recap your adventures for us, and maybe there is a commonality that
you are missing and your efforts are not directed at the parts that will
solve the problem.

The last I had figured is he is out of gas....

When he blows back through the fuel line he doesn't hear bubbles with
the gas cap open, he has a clear blow.

Either that or the line on top of the tank has broken where he can't see it.

I sure would toss a gallon or two into the tank to see if someone
siphoned it or the gauge is wrong before trying to tackle dropping a
rusted on tank... Way to many bolts to have to grind off. Been there
done that 'too' many times....

Hi Mike,
Starting with the Buicks when the their fuel filter's bypass was shut
off, like when someone put a regular filter in place of the stock one, the
cam eccentric would be ground off to round, so as not pump the lever
anymore. http :// www .jimsautoparts,com /images/EG-1189.jpg

good news! as of now at least. i once again put a hose from the pump
inlet to a jug of gas, as expected it cranked a few times and
eventually ran off the jug of gasoline. after running it to my
satisfaction i hooked everything up as normal. i cranked the engine
and it started, expecting it to just run off the gas still in the line
from the jug, i was surprised to see that it kept running. thinking
i was just underestimating the amount of gas left in the lines i ran
it for awhile, then checked the steel line to the tank and gas dripped
out as i unhooked it. so now it is getting gas fine from the tank.
anyone know what happened? is gonna happen again? also i now noticed a
liquid dripping from the tailpipe. its a clear and black liquid that
is not mixed evenly, the black stuff is kind of in the middle of the
clear stuff. anyone know what that is? how to fix it?

thanks to everyone for the previous help and future suggestions

The liquid is probably just condensation mixed with some carbon deposits
from the exhaust. This is normal.

You likely have a pinhole leak in the line or the line was just plain
airlocked.

The gas filter being in upside down is one suspect for this to happen.
When the return line is below the center carb line, the gas all siphons
back to the gas tank making it a bugger to get going after it sits.

The second suspect is a pinhole in the line from the pump to the tank.

This can be overcome bu priming the carb several times or like you did
with the bucket of gas so the engine ran long enough for the pump to
suck the air out of the line when it was hooked up.

If it craps out tomorrow morning again, then prime the carb by pouring
gas down it up to 3 times even and see if it goes.

It's not broken. You're seeing water (normal condensation in the
exhaust) mixed with some soot from the exhaust pipe. Normal.

As for your initial problem, possibly a crack or hole in the fuel line
between the pump and the tank, causing it to draw in air rather than
draw fuel from the tank. Just a guess.

bad news. the fuel problem returned when i was driving today. did
the jug of gas thing again and it works now. is this gonna happen a
lot if i dont find whats causing it? i think im gonna check the steel
fuel line again tmorrow. i think im gnona attach a hose from the
steel line to the jug of gas and see if it works. if it does im
assuming the problem has to be at the tank or any short hoses from the
tank. i was also wondering if there is ever a time when the carb
shouldnt shoot gas out when the throttle is opened?

The carb should always shoot gas out the accelerator pump nozzle when
the throttle is opened. Also, did you check the filter like Mike said?
there have been lots of people that have posted here with fuel problems,
and it ended up being incorrect installation of the filter.

make sure the carb needle and seat are not stuck shut
