Re: do you lock the doors of your jeep?

I've seen a slit cut into a rag top, even unlocked. Just another example
of jealousy, like the trolls of this group.

I live in NYC and always lock my doors even with the top off.
I run a soft top March through November and have not had a problem
yet.
That said I leave nothing out in my rig. I have a tuffy locking
console and everything is in there or locked in my garage until I need
it.
Now that I said that I'll might walk out tomorrow morning and top
will be cut and my rig trashed but the doors will still be locked.

I always lock mine except when it's in my driveway, but of course being
an XJ makes a difference <G>.

I live in Milwaukee - never lock the doors - try not to keep anything too
valuable in it.

Still doesn't mean that people don't take a peek to see what I do have
inside - and steal my favorite wool winter hat. :-/

Doors? I aint go no stinking doors.

If you have a soft top and half doors, or a soft top and full doors for that
matter, it is probably best for your top to leave the doors unlocked. Take
EVERYTHING out, leave NOTHING in, and leave the doors unlocked. If you lock
the doors, the top will be cut. The top may be cut anyhow, but if anybody is
going to get in, they are going to get in no matter what you do, so you may
as well not do anything that is going to result in your stuff getting mucked
up.

I think leaving it open with nothing to take is best.

Soft tops aren't even safe in the bush, the freakin' raccoons know how
to open the zippers at the corners, let alone safe in the city!

And, a racoon with a razor blade will just ruin an otherwise fun camping
trip.

A raccoon will bite into a tuna fish can just to suck the juice out. They
don't need razor blades. My wife said it was real comical, in a primitive
sort of way, seeing me buck naked outside the tent in the middle of the
night, throwing rocks at raccoons. Good thing she forgot to take photos.
Don't camp where there are lots of raccoons.

Cheers,

Earle

On our last trip I brought a big plastic bin that fits the back of the
CJ7 and used nuts and bolts and clamps and vise grips every night to
hold it together but it didn't stop him from chewing on it all freaking
night trying to get into it.

We had neighbours with a dog the first couple nights, no coons, then the
fun started.

Anything left out got a bite. They got the vinegar bottle the first
night and didn't bite too many things else in that one box.

I finally covered the big bin with pepper and bits of duct tape. glue
up, covered with pepper for a nice sticky 'hot foot' and poured
Louisiana Hot sauce around the edges to stop them chewing it. I filled
some duct tape with the sauce and put it on the corner he wanted to chew
the most. The first night this way, he got a couple hot feet and went
away Mad. Really mad from the sounds of the snarls and spits and going
ons. We found two of the duct tape pieces down by the lake next morning
and a few tracks in the pepper.

The next night they were there before dark so my wife treed one. Then
she treed the second that came along a little later. That was a fun
night, she didn't let them come out of that tree until after we went to
bed and these two coons really didn't like each other, the second one
went up the tree to start a territory fight until he realized 'he' was
now in for it too. LOL! They tried changing trees three or four times,
but they couldn't stop their scratching noises so were easy to follow.
They didn't come back that night and waited until 'after' we were in bed
after that. <grin>

Then the next night one pussyfooted around the edges of the box so as to
only leave one paw print, then he tried chewing. Well, the howls and
barks and snarls that came out of him when his nose got into the black
pepper and hot sauce I poured along the edge was worth the lost sleep.
My wife and I were almost pissing ourselves laughing. He tried twice,
once later or there were two equally unhappy because there were two nice
nose prints in the sauce. LOL!

The following nights, we just had the odd one try and they disliked the
pepper sauce just as much. LOL!

I lock mine now and then, depending on where I'm parking it and what's in
it. It's kind of an exercise in futility though.

Locking it only slows someone down from getting in through a rear zipper
anyway. I just think that it keeps them from looking like they own it by
just stepping in rather than climbing through the back.

Re: do you lock the doors of your jeep?

I didn't lock mine for a couple years after the factory grease in the lock
mechanism congealed to the point that I couldn't. But of course I live in
Silverton and the biggest town I ever visit is Durango. That applies to the
full steel doors that go with the fiberglass hard top only. The half door
soft top combination continued to lock OK, but of course that is only good
for keeping honest people out. This summer I finally got around to taking
the full doors apart and lubricating the lock mechanism. Look Ma, it locks
and unlocks, just like a real car. I am not too worried about marmots
breaking in, because they're not tall enough and not that bright. They ate
the wiring harness on my neighbor's Ford Explorer a few years back. Never
saw anyone with such a powerful antipathy towards marmots, like he is now.
Linx maybe, or coyotes, might break in and take my Jeep for a joy ride.
Grizzly haven't been spotted here since the seventies, and black bear I
don't think could drive with those claws they have. Wouldn't need to
either. Have you ever seen one move, when they wanted to?

Cheers,

Earle

Well put --

My [99.5% empty] TJ gets rifled through so often that I'm beginning to
think it's their first stop on a night of petty theft -- they sure
like those 99c flashlights. Christ, I go through those things like
candy.

The only reason I could see to lock the doors would be if the local
thieves' guild decided to target half doors/windows....but it hasn't
happened yet.
