Repair is possible by securing the cable jacket to the control frame with
almost anything that will hold it in place.
One concern is that the cable or the flap operated by the cable may be
binding. If so this will shorten the life of the replacement control unit.
A problem is the usual brittle plastic issue that occurs with old plastic
parts. Seems the control unit suffers from it.
(As well as the console surround and the instrument cluster hood .) We used
to figure that ten years was about when the plastic got to the point that it
would break easily.
