88 Volvo 240 front wheel bearings

Please let me know how to install front wheel bearings. I took the
inner and outter bearings out to replace and didn't have to use any
kind of tool whatsoever to remove them. I purchased new set of wheel
bearings from Les Schwab Tires. Installed them but did not install
the large, beveled metal ring that the bearings were packaged with.
Does this ring have to be installed?

Secondly, despite greasing them completely by hand, within 2 weeks of
installing them into the car, I began to hear bearing noise. I
recently removed the wheels again and on driver's side the lock nut
was unscrewed because the metal thing (can't think of the name) which
keeps the nut on, was broken off.

I would appreciate any advice on how to install these bearings. Do I
need a tool? What is the procedure?

Thank you,

Kevin

The beveled metal ring is the bearing race and should be replaced because they are usually pitted when the bearing goes bad. The metal thing that keeps the nut on is a cotter pin and should not be reused. There should be a washer between the bearing and the nut that is keyed to the spindle and keeps the bearing from turning the nut.
