From Angkor to Mekong in one day by boat? (and other)

Reply from: jobloj@gmail.com

Hi,

does anyone know if we can go down the Mekong all the way from Siem
Reap to the delta in Vietnam by boat? Can one do it in one (long) day?

Visiting Angkor we plan to hire a guide for 2-3 days - any good tips?

We have 2 days (3 nights) for Mekong's delta. Initially we planed to
visit it by ourselves. Is this a good idea or with such a short time
span is an organized cruise a better idea? Any good tips on choosing
one?

many thanks
J.

ps. there are just 2 of us.

Technically possible, the problem will be finding a boat. There are
boats leaving at 7am from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, once in PP you'd have
to find a boat to continue the journey. Then there are 3-5 day tours
from Siem Reap to Saigon (bookable in Siem Reap).

I was twice in Siem Reap and both times I just hired a local. The second
time I hired the taxi driver who picked me up at the airport for $25/day
(car + driver), which is cheap in my opinion.

As I wrote it is possible to book tours in Siem Reap.

mine was $25 per day too
make sure you tell him you do not want to go to restaurants with
tourists.
tell him "I don't want see tourist, i want to see locals"
foot massage is only $5 per hour
u'll have a blast

Do you know how long it takes SR to PP and PP to the Delta? any idea
of the costs?

That seems like a good option. You just took a guy at the airport? Was
he also a guide able to say something about the reliefs and their
meaning?
He probably had his 'favorite' hotel he took you to? I was thinking of
first going to the city, choosing a hotel myself and then finding a
guide. What would you recommend? Can you suggest a good reasonable
hotel?

Many thanks to both Alfred and Rick for comments!

Not sure, should be something like 6 hours from SR to PP (or 8?). By
about 2pm you should be in PP. Can't remember the costs, but it should
be peanuts.

Yes.

No.

Can't remember how I found the hotel. Here is my travelogue:

It's a good idea to stop at an ATM to get some cash when you arrive. The
hotel where I stayed was ok, but I'm sure that there are other, perhaps
even better hotels in SR. However, unless you expect luxury, the hotel
is not so important. You visit SR for the temples not its hotels.

of course (for the hotel)! anything decent really goes, not going to
look for it too long.
re ATM: do you pay for the hotel/guide/taxi in USD or local currency?

I'll have a read through your blog,

many thanks

The ATMs of the ANZ bank gave out US dollars. I paid in US dollars for
the hotel, the driver, the ticket to the temples and for almost anything
else. Got the (small) change in Cambodian money.

pls note that as far as I know ATM cash dispenser are still scarce in
Cambodja.. there was none two years ago.
In any case.. in Siem Reapt the dollar is almost the only value
circulating
at a fixed rate of exchange. the official one.

hotels are very cheap. I guess you can get a 4 or 5 stars hotel for less
than 100 dollars.
taxi pick you up at the airport and normally they do not charge you if you
hire them for the next days
after that.. 25 dollars a day is the normal price.
pls be aware that tickets for Angkor wat are sold for one or two or more
days.
if you buy one for two days.. they will make a photo of you and give you a
ticket with yr photo as a souvenir.
at all times you should have yr ticket with you. there are places where
entrance is free. and other where you should show yr ticket.
the area is quite big. you will need a car or a bycicle.
and lot of water to drink. drinks are sold at higher prices in the area

i took a bus from Siem Reap to Pnohm pehn and it took 6 hours. it is a
special bus. but lots of locals ( hey pay a cheaper fare) on it.
there is also a boat. but more expensive.
