In general, most travelers focus on the Tokyo and Kyoto areas. A lot
depends on where you fly into/out of; if you can arrange to fly into
one area and out of the other it gives you slightly more time. A lot
of travelers like to use luggage forwarding services; I've never used
one myself, but they'll save you from having to find lockers for your
luggage when you're between hotels.

My recommendation is to fly into Osaka and head straight to Kyoto.
Spend three days there. On the fourth day go to Hiroshima, stopping in
Himeji on the way. Visit Miyajima while in the area. On day six head
to Tokyo. Spend the rest of your time there, visiting Nikko and
Kamakura if you have time (the latter is nice but is not necessarily a
must-see). If you're flying out of Osaka spend your last night in that
city so that you're not rushing to get to your plane. A variation
would be to go straight to Hiroshima from the airport; that makes for
a long day, but if your flight arrives at night it might make sense if
you're up to it. Then you'd stop in Himeji on your way to Kyoto.

Good luck!

See the trip I did last October:
http :// www .molon.de/travelogues/Japan/2007/

In two weeks I covered Tokyo, Nikko, Mt Fuji, the Kyoto area (Kyoto,
Nara, Osaka), Himeji, Hiroshima and Miyajima.

By the way, in summer will be hot in Japan.

Huh?

Himeji is just a 3 hours stop on the way from Kyoto to Hiroshima to make
an example. You can leave Kyoto in the morning, stop in Himeji for the
castle and arrive comfortably in Hiroshima at 2:30pm, with enough time
to check in at the hotel and be in Miyajima in the later afternoon for
the sunset. It's all a matter of planning your trip properly.

Nikko can be done comfortably as a day trip from Tokyo. You can stay
longer than one day if you like, but except for the onsen and the
temples there is not much else to see. If you don't care about the
onsens, a few hours for the temples (very impressive) are enough.

Where you can spend a lot of time is Tokyo. I spent almost one week
there and only saw a small fraction of what Tokyo has to offer.

Very easy to do, though unfortunately most people only go to the
castle in Himeji and don't realize there's some other really good
things to see.
