Train trip from BKK to Penang?

Anyone ever tried this? I would like to hear from anyone that has traveled
down from
BKK to Penang.
Thanks for your concern or reply.

Do you mean the regular public trains or the luxury Eastern and Oriental
Express?

Tried to do the regular service in 2000 in reverse direction from
Singapore. Singapore to Butterworth was easy, had a couple of days stopover
in Kuala Lumpur. The train actually goes from Butterworth, which is
opposite the island of Penang. Train wasn't running between Hat Yai
(Thailand) and Butterworth, was told they often were cancelled. Took a taxi
to Hat Yai from Butterworth, actually two taxis, changing at the border.
The Thai one looked suspiciously like a private vehicle, and was quite
decrepit. Saw two bad crashes just over the border. Got to the station
to find trains to Bangkok were full that night, was offered overnight bus
transport by some touts at the station but wouldn't risk it with the
accidents we had just seen. So checked in at a hotel there, and booked on a
flight to BKK next morning. That area of Thailand is politically unstable,
a week after we were there a bomb went off at the Railway Station, and I
believe it's much worse now.

Re: Train trip from BKK to Penang?

its quite ok in thailand, u'd get snenic view
but in malaysia, the train passes thru people's backyard, and very
tall weeds
its kinda a long journey, 18 hours or so?
and getting from butterworth, to the penang Island, another story.
what a hassle!
i don't recommend it.
bus is faster than train in south east asia

I haven't been to the neighbourhood for a while. However, ferries linked
Butterworth and Georgetown. They plied the route day and night in high
frequency. The journey truly wasn't a hassle at all. If I recall it it right
from the continent to the island the fee was nominal and in the opposite
direction there was no fee at all. Naturally tariffs will change time to
time.

No, just a supporter of an unmoderated usenet. If you don't like what he
posts, feel free to killfile him but do not try to be a policeman here
as you have long been on SCT. You and your cronies have destroyed SCT
with all your babbling to the point that serious posters no longer post.
Now you want the same for RTA...
If there's a tosser here, it most definitely is you!

*******In one breath you criticise me for being a "policeman" yet in
the same breath you are doing exactly the same thing.

Does the word hypocrite ring any bells with you???
