Another Video Card Question

Another Video Card Question

Can anyone provide me with some much needed video card suggestions? Mine, an
ATI/Radeon 9800 128M Pro, is going south and will need to be replaced very
soon. I've always had some minor problems with this card. I was told it was
due to a compatibly issue with my motherboard, an Asus A8V. I say minor-I
couldn't run at AGP 8X. I had to go into the Bios and set to 4X and disable
fast write, or it would lock up. The only game I am interested in running is
NASCAR 2003 and the various add-ons.

OS . . . . . . . . . . . . Windows XP, Home version, Service Pack 2

MB . . . . . . . . . . . . Asus A8v Deluxe (rev.2)

Power Supply . . . . Vantec, 520 W

CPU . . . . . . . . . . . .Athlon 64, XP3200+ (939 pin)

Memory . . . . . . . . . 1 GB (2x512mb PC3200-DDR400)

Video Card . . . . . . ATI Radeon 9800 pro (128MB)

Hard Drive . . . . . . . Seagate SATA 160gb

Sound . . . . . . . . . . . Realtec AC'97 Audio for VIA (on board)

Thanks. I've been away from the newsgroup for a while, so I apologize if
this has been covered lately. I searched, but never came up with what I was
looking for.

Here's the card I just purchased.
It's cheap and Works great with BF2 all settings maxed out.

Ugh. For the same price get a 7600GT. 50% more pipelines, etc. Or the
7300GT if you insist, at $20 less:
http :// www .newegg,com /Product/ProductList.asp?Category=38&N=1067920131&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=48

In any case, the OP is running an AGP mobo, and both of the above are
PCI-E. The 8x/FW AGP issue on the 9800pro doesn't really affect the speed
of the card anyway. The OP doesn't say what the actual problem is, but he
might consider simply cleaning and lubeing the fan (Inox is the best lube
for this), and removing & reapplying the heatsink compound on the card. A
half-hour effort will result in a quieter, cooler-running card.

Much better!
The 7300 would have been slower than the 9800!

Yep and he could put it in a glass case on top of his desk and look at
it wishing he could use it since it's PCIe and he needs AGP......

I think the card you bought, 7900gs is about the fastest AGP card you
can get....................
